2012 Dowd Cup Finals Weekend

This weekend sees the annual Ladies Gaelic Football Dowd Cup weekend take place at Queens Playing Fields at Malone.
After a full month of preliminary fixtures in the Dowd Cup involving 5 counties and 3 colleges the semi-finalists are now known and they will battle it out on Saturday to win a place in the final place on Sunday.  The semi-final pairings are UUJ 1 v Tyrone and QUB 1 v Monaghan.  Both games will take place on Saturday at 2.30pm with the final then taking place in the same venue on Sunday at 3.00pm.

 

Preceding the Dowd Cup semi’s on Saturday is the McNally Plate competition with UUJ 2, QUB 2, St Mary’s, UU Coleraine and UU Magee taking part.  Throw-in time for the group stages is 10.30am with games ongoing until the semi-finals at 1.30pm.  The final of the McNally Plate will take place at 1.30pm immediately before the Dowd Cup Final.

 

In the McNally Plate UUJ 2 and St Mary’s have shared the spoils over the past few years, with each taking the title twice since 2008.  With a host of fine footballing freshers in all the colleges this year perhaps an upset in the McNally plate is in store.

 

Meanwhile, in recent years in the Dowd Cup UUJ have taken the title, but a strong Monaghan team saw off their challenge last year to bring the cup to the Farney county.  Many would say that UUJ and Monaghan will be the line-up for this year’s final too, and if this is the case both will have a lot to prove in their quest for silverware – UUJ trying to win back the cup for the universities and Monaghan aiming to retain the title.  Tyrone and QUB may have something to say about that though!  Either way it’s sure to be a great weekend of football.
