Kerry ladies secured their spot in the upcoming TG4 Munster Ladies final with a hard fought win against Clare, played Wednesday 2nd July in Kilmihill. Played in winter like conditions for the month of July, with heavy rain throughout the game & a strong wind Kerry found it hard to break down the Clare blanket defence, as they defended deeply with often only 2 Clare players inside the Kerry half. Despite playing with the breeze in an uneventful first half, Clare registered 3 points to Kerry 6 points. Kerry within minutes of the second half hit Clare for the first goal, when Megan O’Connells shot was saved by the Clare keeper, but Patrice Dennehy followed up first to finish it off to the back of the net. Kerry second goal came after Louise Ni Mhuirtceartaigh fisted a high ball which was hanging in the air to the back of the Clare net, in the 48th minute. Kerry closed out the game by adding 3 further points, while good discipline & defending held Clare scoreless in the second half. Final Score: Kerry 2-11 Clare 0-03.

Kerry: Edel Murphy, Aoife Lyons, Aisling Leonard, Caroline Kelly, Maria Quirke 0-1, Denise Hallissey, Gina Crowley, Emma Sherwood, Bernie Breen, Cait Lynch, Sarah Houlihan 1-3 (0-3F), Cassandra Buckley, Patrice Dennehy, Megan O’Connell, Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh 1-5 (0-3F) Subs: Aislinn Desmond for Hallissey (45), Lorraine Scanlon for Sherwood (45), Deirdre Corridan for Houlihan (45), Julie Brosnan for Dennehy (45)

Kerry now face Cork in the TG4 Munster Senior Final which is part of a double header in Rathmore on 12th July.  Kerry are the current Munster champions, dethroning Cork last year as they went for an unprecedented 10 in a row of titles.  Both sides met in earlier rounds in Pairc Ui Rinn with Cork coming out on top by 4 points. Cork as per recent ties between the sides, got a goal within the first 3 minutes – something which the Kerry side must not allow on Saturday. Kerry go into the game on Sunday after a gritty game against Clare, but will be without the services of Sarah Jane Joy who injured her knee during the clash between the sides. It will be a very exciting game, with both teams looking to avoid the slippery qualifier routes with quality opposition such as Mayo & Monaghan also in the qualifiers. The senior game throws in at 3.30 & Kerry will be looking for a large home crowd to come & support, kids go free. The curtain raiser is the Intermediate clash between Limerick & Waterford at 1.30. Finuge/St Senans Gaelic 4Mothers & Others team & Rathmore Cailiní Óga will be the participants in the half time Exhibition games in both games.

Congratulations to John Mitchels & Listowel Emmets ladies who completed the Gaelic 4 Girls programme last week, by attending a national blitz in Croke Park, where 40 other teams from other counties attended. The Gaelic4Girls programme offers clubs the opportunity to increase the numbers of players playing in their club. Players that might never have played the game before will have the chance to take part in the sport in a safe environment and eventually they can be integrated with the existing players in the club. We hope the girls enjoyed the programme & will continue with their clubs.  (Picture John Mitchels in Croke Park)
