All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship Final 2009

All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship Final 2009
( Michael Forde Leinster PRO )

St. Brigid’s ( Dublin) 1-8 Brian Boru’s ( Tipperary) 1-9.

Brian Boru’s of Tipperary traveled to St Peregrines GAA Club, Dublin, to take on St. Brigid’s on their own patch, and came away with a one point winning margin to claim their first, Tesco’s All Ireland Intermediate club championship title.
The score board showed that there was only a point between the sides at the final whistle, but it was the timing of that single score that proved to be the difference. Despite playing against the wind, and having a number of chances, St. Brigid’s failed to raise any flag in the first half, while the club from the Premier County, playing with a strong breeze, ( ok, a gale force wind ) in the first half , seemed to have drove the wedge too deep, after they registered a goal and eight points with out reply from the Dubs.
The dogs in the street knew that St. Brigid’s were not going to take this lying down, led by their influential captain Elaine Kelly, and cheered on by a packed stand, they pinned the visitors in their own half, and reeled them in slowly but surely, notching up a goal and seven points to close the gap to a single point (1-7 to 1-8), with less than ten minutes remaining on the clock, it was game on.
It looked as though Brian Boru’s had put up the shutters and decided to run down the clock, by playing possession football, in an effort to take the sting out of the St. Brigid’s attack. The Dublin club side continued to press in search of an equalizing point or a goal that would put them ahead for the first time in the game, but unfortunately for them it was the Tipperary side that gave the screw a final, agonizing twist with their only score of the second half, from the boot of number thirteen and player of the match Trisha Hickey, to raised the white flag of victory.
St. Brigid’s captain Elaine Kelly tagged on the final point of the game to bring her personal tally to four, two from frees. Pat Quill, President, Cumann Peil Gael na mBan presented Brian Boru’s captain Orla Fleming with the Tesco’s All Ireland Intermediate club championship trophy, with Trisha Hickey collecting the player of the match award.
