Board Gas Ladies Football National League Division 2

Down ladies second game in this competition was in Saval on Sunday afternoon, the opposition; Clare.

Clare dominated the early stages of this game with the Down backs having difficulty coping with the fast moving Clare forwards. The Clare pressure resulted in scores getting in for a point followed by a goal. The full back line of Niamh Canavan, Niamh McGowan and Catherine Boden worked hard to counter the threat from the Clare forwards.

Down’s Eliza Downey broke from the half back line went on a run which she finished to the Clare net. Further pressure from Clare saw Down concede a penalty which was blasted wide of the Down posts.

Down came more into the game with Kyla Trainor and Clara Fitzpatrick getting more possession at midfield. Lisa Morgan had the beating of her marker and distributed well to Orla Fegan, Chara Laverty and Natasha Ferris. This resulted in Chara and Natasha getting in for a brace of points.

Clare responded broke through the centre and got another goal. The twin Fegans Sinead and Orla, Emma Mulhern and on her debut for Down, Kate McKay all upped their games. The Down ladies now got the lead back with two points from the boots of Kyla Trainor and Lisa Morgan. Just before the interval Clare snatched another goal to put them back in front.

On the resumption both sides traded scores. Good Down pressure resulted in a goal and a point putting them back in front.

In goals Rostrevor’s young minor Kerry Ann Magee showed a steady pair of hands and composure under pressure. The experience of Ciara McArdle, Grainne McClean and Ciara OHiggins helped to steady Down while the introduction of minor player Eimear Kane added bite to the Down attack.

The Clare Ladies rallied set up more attacks which resulted in another goal and point giving them a three point lead going into the final stages.

It was at this point that the Down ladies dug deep, showed a renewed urgency, played their best football of the game and dominated Clare. Down launched attack after attack but poor finishing nearly cost them dear. In the closing minutes their consistent pressure did pay off resulting in three points which levelled the match.
