Bord Gáis Energy Ladies Football Teams of the League Announced

 

Players from 23 Counties Represented

 

The annual Bord Gáis Energy Teams of League awards ceremony took place inCrokeParkthis evening where 60 players were recognised for their displays over the last four months.

 

2012 is the fourth year Bord Gáis Energy have sponsored the Ladies National Football Leagues and these awards honour those players, across all four divisions, that delivered on a consistent basis for their counties over the league campaigns.

 

Throughout the National League, each manager was given the opportunity to nominate players from opposing teams for the Team of the League for their division. The nominations were compiled and 15 players were chosen from each division. Each player was presented with a commemorative frame and a specially designed Bord Gáis Energy Team of the League Kit.

 

Ger Cunningham, Sports Ambassador for Bord Gáis Energy commented, “I’d like to congratulate all the players recognised here tonight.  The Teams of the League has become an important date in the Ladies Football calendar and I know the announcement is eagerly awaited once the finals are complete. It is a real reflection of the effort and commitment put in by the players throughout the season.

Monaghan, who preventedCorkfrom winning five Division One titles in a row, will be represented by five players on the Division One team including captain and full back Sharon Courtney. Runners-upCorkand beaten semi-finalists Dublin, each had three players rewarded for their efforts. Meath, who lost out to Cork in the semi-finals, are represented by two positions while Kildare’s Kate Leahy and Donegal’s Geraldine McLoughlin complete the line up.

 

In Division Two, league winners Mayo lead the way with four positions including captain Claire Egan and League Final Player of the Match Cora Staunton.Galwayfollowed close behind with three winners. Clare, Kerry and Fermanagh were all represented with two selections each. Finally,Waterford’s Grainne Kenneally was awarded with a wing back position and Players’ Player of the Year 2012 nominee Aisling Doonan took the number 14 jersey.

 

Division Three finalists Leitrim and Westmeath featured heavily as they received five and three positions respectively. Leitrim’s winners included star forward Áine Tighe while the Westmeath’s representatives included captain and centre back Jenny Rogers.  Armagh were well represented with three position, Down received two positions while Wicklow and Roscommon were both awarded one place each.

 

Limerickand Longford dominated the Division Four team with five selections each including Player of the Match from the final, Longford’s Claire Greene. Louth followed closely behind with three players recognised on the night. Offaly and Carlow completed the 15 with one position each.

 

The Bord Gáis Energy / Irish Daily Star Manager of the Month Awards were also concluded with Father Mike Murphy of Mayo announced as the May Manager of the Month after he guided his team to the Division Two title and a place back in the top tier for 2013.

 

Monaghan manager Gregory McGonagle was presented with the Manager of the League Award in recognition of his success in guiding Monaghan to the Division One final before beating reigning championsCork.

 

Pat Quill Uachtaráin Cumman Peil Gael na mBan said It is a great personal honour for the players to be selected and a boost for team morale coming into the championship season. These awards, reward talented players for their consistency throughout the league campaign and provides an opportunity for players from counties who do not reach the final stages of competitions to be recognised. I thank the county managers for their diligence in their nominations.

 

The Manager of the Month awards and the Manager of the League award is a recognition of tactical, organisational and managerial skills of our managers. It has been a wonderful evening of interaction and friendships and I thank Bórd Gáis Energy for their foresight in honouring these talented members of our Association.
