Clare Division 1 League Semi Final

Newmarket-on-Fergus qualified for the Division 1 League Final, when they overcame the challenge of West Clare Gaels last Sunday in Kilmihil.  In what was a brilliant advertisement for the ladies game in the County, the Newmarket girls just about deserved their win in a game that went right down to the wire.

Still reeling from their camogie League Final defeat less than twenty fours before, it took a while for the Newmarket girls to settle into the game as West Clare Gaels kicked the first two points.  In what were perfect conditions for football with little or no breeze and the rain staying away, the Newmarket girls responded and scored the opening goal of the game through corner forward Ann Marie Hayes.  This gave Newmarket a little cushion and with both teams cancelling each other out to the half time break it was advantage Newmarket as they held a two point lead at the interval on a score line of 1-4 to 0-5.

At this juncture the game hung in the balance and whichever team came out of the blocks quickly for the second half would go a long way in deciding the outcome of the contest.  After a few minutes nip and tuck the game took a big swing in the direction of West Clare Gaels when they breached the Newmarket defence for two goals in quick succession.  At this stage most people would have assumed that the Gaels would go and win the game but the Newmarket girls kept chipping away at the score board and eventually took the lead going into the final stretch.

In what was a dramatic finale, in which every ball was fought for fiercely, both teams had chances to score but a combination of last ditch defending and poor shooting kept the game in the balance.  Newmarket scored the last two points late on to clinch victory and qualify for the final in which they will play the Banner this Friday evening.
