Clare Ladies Féile Final Report

Clare Ladies Press Release 25/03/2006
Clare Ladies Féile Final ReportSeven teams competed for this year’s Clare Féile Championship at a wet and windy Gurteen on Saturday. Reigning All Ireland Champions the Banner Ladies were the pre competition favourites and as it transpired everything went to script for this well drilled Ennis outfit.

The Banner completed their round robin group with comfortable victories over West Clare Gaels, Newmarket and Milltown. This guaranteed an A final place.

In the opposite group Wolfe Tones na Sionna were the top team with wins over Fergus Rovers and Doora-Barefield. So all was set for an Ennis .v. Shannon final. The runners up in both groups contested the B final and in this game an improving Miltown overcame a gallant Fergus Rovers team.

In the A final the Banner and Wolfe Tones traded early goals before the Ennis girls stepped up a gear and raced into a 2 – 4 to 1 – 0 half time lead. Wind assisted in the second half the Banner were not to be denied their fourth Clare Féile title in a row and they pulled away to record a 7 – 5 to 1 – 0 win.

Following the match Clare Ladies Board Chairman, James Lafferty, presented the Clare Féile trophy to winning captain Eimear O’Connor. The Banner now go forward to represent Clare Ladies Football in the All Ireland Féile series to be held in Wicklow in early July. The Ennis club have a remarkable record in this prestigious national competition being All Ireland champions in 2001 and 2005 and beaten finalists in 2003 and 2004. Judging by their performance in winning this year’s Clare title they will be in with a great chance of winning national honours again this year. The Clare Ladies Board wishes them every success in their efforts to win back to back All Ireland titles.

The Clare Ladies Board also wishes to thank Johnny Hayes and Michael Fitzpatrick who expertly refereed all the games on Saturday and also want to acknowledge the generosity and co-operation of the St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield Club for making their grounds available for the tournament.

Dr. Paul Mckenna, PRO Clare Ladies Football Board.
