Best scores of 2017

IT’S been a memorable year for Ladies Football across various grades and competitions.

In this brilliant video, Jerome Quinn takes a look at some of the best scores of 2017.

2017 ending on a high for Ladies Football

2017 is ending on a high for Ladies Gaelic Football with big crowds, high-quality All Ireland club finals and prominent media coverage.

All three deciders were closely-contested and full of drama, with the Intermediate Final between Dunboyne and Kinsale thrilling the crowd at Parnell Park on Sunday.

‘I was shocked by the standard of our first-half’, says Dunboyne manager Brendan Quinn. ‘It was pure class, 2-7 to 2-7’.

Jerome Quinn’s review of the weekend also features Cora Staunton, Martha Carter (both Carnacon, Mayo) and Hannah Looney (Aghada, Cork).

Cora heads for Australia after capturing sixth All-Ireland club medal

CARNACON won a sixth All-Ireland senior club title on Sunday.

And their captain Cora Staunton captained the Mayo and Connacht champions to glory against Mourneabbey at Parnell Park.

She, and team-mate Fiona McHale, spoke to Jerome Quinn following a hard-fought win.

Reaction as Aghada claim All-Ireland junior title

POST-match interviews from the Aghada camp following the All-Ireland junior club final victory over Corduff.

Hannah Looney’s friend joins in All-Ireland junior club final celebrations!

HANNAH Looney played a key role as Aghada won the All-Ireland junior club final against Corduff.

Cork side Aghada won the silverware in their very first national decider, scoring a 2-6 to 0-3 victory in Crettyard.

After the game, Looney spoke to our reporter Jerome Quinn, and she was joined by a local friend during the course of the interview!

“We’d take a one-point win any day” – Cork clubs eye All-Ireland clean sweep

COULD history repeat itself?

In 2003, Cork clubs swept the boards in the All-Ireland series, winning the junior, intermediate and senior crowns. Gabriel Rangers captured junior honours, Naomh Abán won the intermediate final and Donoughmore landed the senior title.

Next weekend, Cork clubs have their eyes on another clean sweep as Aghada prepare to face Corduff in the junior final on Saturday, before Kinsale tackle Dunboyne in Sunday’s intermediate decider, followed by Mourneabbey’s battle with Carnacon in the senior showpiece.

Excitement is mounting in all three clubs and last Monday, we sent our reporter Denis Vahey to Aghada, Kinsale and Mourneabbey to capture a flavour of the build-up…

Cora Staunton interview following Carnacon’s All-Ireland club semi-final win

CARNACON captain Cora Staunton was interviewed following last Sunday’s All-Ireland senior club semi-final victory against St Macartan’s from Tyrone.

On December 3, Staunton can win her sixth All-Ireland senior club medal, when Mayo and Connacht champions Carnacon take on Mourneabbey from Cork at Parnell Park (3.45pm).

Staunton is also in the running for a record-equalling 11th TG4 All-Star award, with the gala banquet set to take place at the Citywest Hotel on Saturday night (November 25).

Five-goal Reaney helps seal Aisling McGing All-Ireland U21 glory for Galway

IT was very much a case of third time lucky for Galway last Sunday, as they defeated Mayo comfortably to win a very first Aisling McGing All-Ireland U21 crown.

Galway had lost previous finals in 2013 and 2016 but made no mistake against their Connacht rivals, by scoring a big win in Ballyhaunis.

Stephen Glennon’s Galway, who had a player-of-the-match performance from Shauna Hynes, helped themselves to ten goals.

Half of those were supplied by one player, as deadly forward Emma Reaney filled her boots.

Inspirational Etna Speaks After Sligo Win

‘Football has helped me immensely’ – Sligo corner-back Etna Flanagan on returning to the game after the death of her 3-year-old son Rioghnán in 2015.

Aged 41, the oldest player in the TG4 All Ireland Championship is one step away from Croke Park after Sunday’s quarter-final victory over Roscommon.

‘To be honest, football helped me through it all and it still does, every day. I’ll play as long as I can, I love playing and the ambition is to win the All Ireland’.

Etna’s son Rioghnán had been waiting for a heart transplant and now her Sligo team-mates wear tee-shirts before games to raise awareness of donor cards.

‘She’s some bit of stuff!’ said Walsh after former All Star nominee Archibold scored 1-6. ‘And she fights as well, she was back in full-back line, her defensive play was absolutely savage’.

Westmeath gained promotion to Division 1 with their comprehensive win by 3-15 to 0-11.

Rebellettes Young Guns Shine

Cork’s domination of Ladies Gaelic Football has continued with Sunday’s thrilling Lidl NFL Division 1 Final defeat of Donegal but they did this time with a ‘new’ team.

With an average age of just 21, the Rebels landed yet another title without the likes of Rena Buckley, Briege Corkery, Deirdre O’Reilly and the injured Brid Stack.

Instead, teenage defenders Melissa Duggan and Emma Spillane have stepped up and midfielder Jess O’Shea has grabbed her opportunity to impress.

‘It’s a dream come true’, says Duggan, while Spillane says it is ‘unreal’ to be playing on the Cork team.

Doireann Steps into the Captaincy

Regular Cork captain Ciara O’Sullivan will be replaced by her sister Doireann for Sunday’s Lidl National League Division 1 Final against Donegal (4pm in Parnell Park).

With Ciara away on a break, the captaincy remains with county champions Mourneabbey and within the O’Sullivan family.

‘It’s an honour’, says 5-time League winner Doireann. ‘I’m hoping that nothing will change, there are leaders on the team so I don’t think I’ll have to do anything different other than hopefully collect the cup’.

Goal Hero McLaughlin Helps Make History

Cork and Galway top Division One on twelve points each

Video: Leonard Not Getting Carried Away with Kerry Win

Galway have continued their impressive start to 2017 by beating Kerry to go clear at the top of the Lidl National League with Cork, but Roisin Leonard is not getting carried away.

YouTube Preview Image’There’s been a lot of hype about us during Leagues in the past and then we’d lose in Championships’, says the Corofin girl after scoring two goals on her home pitch in the defeat of Kerry.

‘So we’re kinda all talk and no action, but this year hopefully it’ll be all action and no talk!’

Galway will go to Cork next Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash.

Galvin Delight at O’Connor Cup Win

Kerry’s Anna Galvin collected the O’Connor Cup at McHale Park in Castlebar after her UL team defeated UCC by 2-5 to 0-8.

‘I feel pride, joy and relief’, says Anna. ‘I couldn’t be more proud of the team I was captain of today. They are the best team to ever be part of and I will never forget any of my years in UL’.

On the eve of the 30th O’Connor Cup weekend, Chairperson of the Ladies HEC Fiona Hudson looks forward to an historic celebration of Ladies Gaelic Football at GMIT Mayo.

For the first time, six Finals at different grades will be played over the three-day competition with winners to be decided for the Moynihan, Donaghy, Lagan, Lynch, Giles and O’Connor Cups.

‘We decided to make a big deal of the event in the 30th year’, says Hudson. ‘We have 1600 players registered and this format gives all of our players a chance to play at the weekend’.

Aherne Pleased With Dubs Reaction

‘What we needed was a reaction and we got it’ – Dublin captain Sinead Aherne speaking after her team’s defeat of Donegal at Parnell Park in the Lidl National League.

The Dubs lost to Cork last week and then threw away a five-point first-half lead to go in level with Donegal. They faced a stiff breeze in the second-half but dominated the early exchanges and grabbed two crucial goals.

In the end, Dublin won by 2-17 to 3-7 and are now joint top of Division One with Cork and Galway after four rounds of the League.

Phelan and Cork Young Guns Step Up

With only six of their 2016 All Ireland Final team, a very young Cork selection bounced back from defeat in Armagh to beat Dublin by six points at Mallow in the Lidl National League.

Roisin Phelan has moved to full-back in the absence of 2016 Player of the Year Brid Stack and gave a commanding performance.

‘It’s great for the younger players to get this chance. Hopefully the older girls will come back in the long run but there’s advantages to them taking time off as well’.

Armagh Delight at Rebels Defeat

Champions Cork suffered a rare defeat to Armagh at Clonmore in the second round of Lidl National League games, 0-12 to 0-9.

‘It’s nice to win’, says veteran Mairead Tennyson who had never previously played on a winning team against Cork.

Report from Cora’s Return v Galway

However, all did not go to plan as Galway came away with the victory but Cora Staunton reflected on her return and their first match of the season with Jerome Quinn.

Ulster girls break the mould

See a special report from St Paul’s Bessbrook in Armagh where girls are doing it for themselves. As part of a new initiative from Ulster Ladies Gaelic Football, 16/17 year-old girls are being coached so that THEY can become the coaches of the future.

‘The girls were brilliant’, says Master Coach Maggie Farrelly who put the teenagers through a two-day ‘Unlocking the Potential’ pilot course in the school, with one day in the classroom and one day of practical experience. ‘This course has given those with potential a bit of confidence and a starting point to go into coaching’.

Apart from the likes of Monaghan manager Paula Cunningham, Ladies Football is dominated by male coaches but Ciaran Murtagh from Ulster LGFA hopes to change the mindset: ‘Traditionally Daddy becomes the Coach but we are targeting girls at a young age and we want them to go back to their clubs and deliver sessions there’.

‘Ulster is lagging behind and we are losing 18-year-olds but this is a long-term strategy and we have to build from the grass roots up to break the mould. Ultimately, we hope this will encourage more young girls to play our games’.

In March, Ulster will host a Conference focussing on Female Participation in Gaelic Sport, scheduled for March 11th at the Armagh City Hotel.

Video: Cork Manager Speaks after Rebellettes Produce Their Best

Champions Cork gave their best performance yet under manager Ephie Fitzgerald to demolish Galway and keep their Lidl National League title hopes alive.

‘People assume that there is a transition period because of long-term injuries and a few retirements but in Cork we can’t afford to have transition’, says Ephie after the 6-15 to 1-11 victory.

’There’s plenty of competition for places and the players who came in today certainly put their hands up for next week’.

Cork must beat Armagh in their last game to have any chance of holding on to their title.

Cora Leads Mayo to Victory over Champs

It was a great opening weekend in the Lidl National Football League for Mayo who made the journey to Cork to face the champions in their Division 1 opener. Cora Staunton was the star attraction and the 22 season veteran delivered in some style despite an early penalty miss, she went on to score 1-06 from their tally of 2-08. Ephie Fitzgerald would have hoped for a different result in his first game in charge and will now have to lift his side for their visit to Kerry in the next round.

Kingham and Martin the Heroes for Donaghmoyne

Unexpected hero Hazel Kingham kicked the last two points of Donaghmoyne’s All Ireland Senior Final win over Mourneabbey at Parnell Park.

The full-back followed her marker upfield and got on the end of attacks with two superb finishes, though she was quick to deflect praise onto All Star goalkeeper Linda Martin.

‘Our manager said that today someone different had to step up, and today Linda did us proud’.

The remarkable Monaghan team won by 0-11 to 0-8 and they have now won four All Irelands in ten years.

Sheerin is Hattrick Hero

If there is such a thing as a triple hat-trick hero, then Siobhan Sheerin from little Glenelly in Tyrone is it.

The livewire full-forward fired three quick goals to kill off Donaghmoyne in the Ulster Intermediate Final at Killyclogher on Sunday and so finished her Ulster campaign with three hat-tricks in three games.

‘When I got the second goal I could hear the crowd shouting for a hat-trick so I had to go for it’, Siobhan explained after the game, while her captain Grace Donnelly described the Player of the Match performance as ‘extra-special’.

Donaghmoyne Dethrone Termon

Donaghmoyne gained a measure of revenge for their defeat in the 2014 Ulster Championship final by defeating the same opposition, Termon from Donegal, to take their Ulster crown in Killyclogher last weekend.

This was an important victory for the 2013 All Ireland Club Champions who will be hoping to emulate the achievements of Termon by annexing the All Ireland title themselves.

Offaly hold out against Fermanagh

Offaly held out to defeat a very experienced Fermanagh side in the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate quarter final in a match where the Leinster side would have been considered underdogs going into this tie but with the returned Mairead Daly they were able to rally in the final few minutes despite conceding a goal to Fermanagh star Caroline Little.

Tighe at the Top of her Game

For many years it has been acknowledged that Áine Tighe is amongst the very best forwards playing the game. However, that recognition of her status is only now gaining momentum as the imposing attacker is producing some of her best football to date as Leitrim continue to progress through the TG4 Intermediate Championship.

Here is more proof of her class as she led Leitrim to a great win over Clare. The star attacker accounted for 3 goals and made the 4th.

They are now preparing for their TG4 All Ireland Quarter final against either Meath or Cork.

In Part 2 of our behind the scenes video with Galway we concentrate on the up and coming talents that are the Ward twins Nicola and Louise who talk about watching the 2004 All Ireland Final that Galway won in 2004 and playing with some of those heroes.

Top 3 Scores from 2014

Donegal’s Denise Dunnion has won Jeromne Quinn’s ‘Score of the Year’ in Ladies Gaelic Football for a superb point taken from an acute angle in the New York Senior Final.

Originally from Four Masters and a sister of the current Donegal Chairman Sean Dunnion, Denise has been a leading player in the Big Apple for a decade. The right-corner-forward curled her score over the bar from wide on the left and scored a total of 1-3 in Kerry/Donegal’s first ever New York title success.

Fermanagh All Star nominee Marcella Monahan was voted into second place for her unstoppable shot to the top corner of the Waterford net in the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Championship at St Peregrine’s in Dublin. With her team trailing by three points in the second-half, the half-back from Newtownbutler raced forward and fired a brilliant goal that proved to be a turning point in the game and in Fermanagh’s season.

There had to be a Cork girl in the Top three though not many would have expected it to be Linda Barrett for scoring a terrific team goal for Queensland in the Australasia Final in Melbourne. From Mallow, Linda played for the Rebel county before transferring to the East Celts in Brisbane. The midfielder was involved twice in the well-worked move against New South Wales, linking play and then firing to the net.

Jerome points out that these ‘Best Scores’ are only from games that he filmed in 2014, but still, the fact that two of the Top Three ‘Best Scores’ are from outside Ireland is further proof that both the standard of play and the numbers involved in Ladies Gaelic Football are rising rapidly every year. Fermanagh Determined to Avoid Semi Final Repeat

For the second year in a row Fermanagh have reached the semi final of the TG4 Intermediate All Ireland Championship. At the same stage last year they were 50 seconds away from Croke Park leading by 4 points but what followed was the greatest comeback witnessed in Ladies Gaelic Football.

However, Fermanagh have overcome that heartache and returned to the semi finals where they are determined to put things right and lay the ghosts of 2013 to rest.

Trainor is a Class Act for Down

Long-serving Down forward Kyla Trainor played a key role at both ends of the pitch in helping her team qualify for the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Semi-finals.
The joint-captain scored 1-3 as Down surged into a ten-point lead against Sligo at Clones but Kyla was then required to help out in defence when the lead was reduced to just one point in the closing stages.

Kyla will need to be in top form against Connacht opposition again as they face Leitrim this weekend in their TG4 Intermediate Semi Final

‘She’s a class act’ says Down manager Mark Copeland. ‘Kyla has been with the Senior team for 13 years and she’s a great leader, a brilliant player, a great asset to have and one we will look to for the semi-finals’.

Wexford Goals see them through

Down ‘Lucky’ to Survive Sligo Onslaught

Probably the most exciting finish to an inter-county game at the weekend was at St Tiernach’s Park in Clones where Sligo nearly snatched victory from Down in their TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Quarter-final.

Down led by ten points well into the second-half but Sligo reduced the gap to just one point and had late chances to win. In the end, the Mourne girls held out on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-10.

‘The girls are absolutely devastated’ said Sligo manager Pat Costello. ‘They gave it everything but it wasn’t to be’.

Down manager Mark Copeland knew luck had been on his side. ‘If I’m honest, they were unfortunate not to draw or nick a win. We’re relieved but it’s about getting over the line and we’re pleased to be in the semi-finals’.

Costello now sees Down and Waterford as being Championship favourites, with Fermanagh a ‘dark horse’.
