Connacht Make it Back to Back PPS Interprovincial Titles

2015 PPS interprovincial tournament

Connacht made it 2 in a row of successes as they claimed the Interprovincial Post Primary Schools Tournament in Coralstown/Kinnegad on Saturday last. The Westerners came into the tournament as favourites as they boasted a panel that included 3 full intercounty senior players in the Ward sisters, Nicola and Louise along with Olivia Divilly and was backboned by the All Ireland minor championship winning Galway panel.

The first round of matches saw Ulster and Leinster meet in a a high scoring encounter that saw the two sides share 9 goals between them with Ulster coming out on top on the incredible scoreline of 6-01 to 3-04. In the other match Connacht met Munster who were fancied to give the champions a stern test, especially as they boasted one of the brightest talents in the game amongst their ranks, Emer Scally who scored a goal for Cork in last year’s All Ireland final. However, Connacht were not to be deterred as they produced a convincing display to outscore their rivals 4-06 to 0-04.

The second round saw Connacht meet Ulster knowing a win would guarantee their passage to the decider and they duly obliges scoring 3-09 in response to Ulster’s 3 goal haul. Munster needed a win to reach the Cup final and they dug deep to find that victory as they outscored Leinster 1-10 to 0-04 to ensure they would have another chance to defeat the champions.

Ulster had performed well throughout the day and they received their reward as they claimed the Interprovincial Shield title by beating Leinster by 3 goals on a scoreline of 4-07 to 1-07. The Cup final proved to be a much tighter affair as the champions met Munster in a dramatic and tense encounter. However, despite fierce opposition Connacht were not to be denied in their quest to make it back to back titles as they claimed the title on a scoreline of 5 points to 3.

Connacht had a galaxy of stars on their side at the final; however, the player of the tournament went to one of the less heralded players in Shauna Hayes who is a player with a very bright future ahead of her.
