Tyrone Club notes

Week two of the Tyrone ladies adult league once again produced good football over several days of competition. St Macartans and Errigal Ciaran signalled their attentions in division one with massive wins. The Macartans brushed aside the challenge of Carrickmore with ease, five goals rattling in from a rampant Clogher Valley side. Errigal racked up 7-13 at home to a disappointing Glenelly who are finding things tough this season, the visitors only managed to register 0-4. There was a closer battle in the weekends other senior tie. Four points separated Dungannon and Strabane with the Aodh Ruadh girls coming in on the right side. It proved to be an entertaining tie with the Sigersons playing decent football, certainly she showed signs of recovery after their opening day loss to Errigal. So in the top flight it’s Errigal and St Macartans with two from two.

Two from two as well for St Enda’s in the Intermediate grade, after a shaky start against Loughmacrory Omagh eventually pulled clear with goals from Christiane Hunter, Terri McCullagh, Orlagh McNamee and Cara McCrossan helping them to a 4-10 to 2-8 win. Lisa McAleer though was superb for the Lough girls who have yet to find a win. Donaghmore are also early pacesetters in division two, they were forced to battle all the way against a determined Ardboe, eventually sealing a one point win.

Mna Na Deirge got off the mark in division three with a good performance and win at Galbally while Fintona were big winners over Moy while in a high scoring affair Dromore got the win over Fr Rocks who have looked impressive so far this term. Beragh also racked up a big score at home to Edendork.

The biggest winners of the weekend were Pomeroy, they hit a remarkable twelve goals at home as they eased to a big win over Urney in Junior B.

There’s a break in proceedings now for some clubs as the county minors focus on Sundays Ulster final while the senior squad are also gearing up for their Ulster opener with Armagh over the first weekend of June.

ULSTER UNDER 16 FINAL

Tyrone 0-10

Cavan 6-9

There was disappointment for the Tyrone Under 16s at the weekend as they finally came up short against Cavan at Carrickcruppen in the Ulster final. Tyrone battled hard but on the day Cavan were outstanding, rattling in six goals, it was certainly the case of goals winning games. Tyrone had a youthful look about them too and the physicality of the Brefni side also contributed to their win.

Three goals in each half ensured a comfortable U16A title victory in the end for a very hungry Cavan side.

Playing with the aid of a very strong wind the Breffni girls dominated from the early stages and led at the break 3-8 to 0-4, the goals coming from Alisa Mc Enroe (2) and Andrea O Reilly.

Further goals in the second half from Reilly, Laura Keogan and Catherine Dolan guaranteed victory. While Cavan were excellent throughout corner forward Geraldine Smyth was particularly impressive. Tyrone had to play second fiddle for most of this game but Dearbhla Mc Donald and Aimee Coyle did mange a combined tally of 8 points.

LADIES FOOTBALL

ULSTER MINOR FINAL

After the defeat of the Tyrone under 16s in last weeks Ulster under 16 final at the hands of Cavan,Tyrone will have a chance for quick revenge as the counties meet again this time in the Ulster minor final on Sunday. Tyrone have worked hard under the guidance of a new look management team headed by Kevin Bogle, in the group games they recorded wins over Donegal and Armagh before drawing with Monaghan with a heavy loss to Sundays opponents in what was a dead rubber, both teams already safely through to the final.

Reliant on a big squad with an eye perhaps on next year Tyrone have impressed this term, despite missing several players on the opening day of the campaign against Donegal at Fintona, Tyrone secured a fine win and that was the catalyst that have seen them through to the decider but as Bogle is well aware Cavan are a massive test.

“ They have enjoyed a lot of underage success and as the Under 16s found out last week they are a quality county at all levels, we know that we will have to be at our best if we are to get our hands on the title, we have the players capable of winning, they have all made the effort despite the fact that they have had so many commitments in football.”

The Tyrone boss also paid tribute to his fellow managers and coaches who have prepared the girls ahead of Sundays Ulster decider,

“ The build up has been difficult with so much club football, school work and part time jobs , but we have asked the girls to commit and they certainly have done just that” enthused Bogle who is in his first term as manager.

Racking up 8-44 in their four games with skipper Neamh O’Neill among plenty of those Tyrone will feel they have a real chance. O’Neill has impressed at club level now for several seasons and despite her young age has also made her mark on the senior stage. The talented Sperrin Og player is a natural leader too but this is far from a one player team. Manager Bogle has plenty of options with the bulk of his squad all with adult club experience, Ciara Fox and Hannah Ward have impressed at the back while O’Neill and Meabh Mallon could well prove to be a handful for the Breffni midfield. Up front Siobhan Sheerin is a constant scoring threat, her 2-4 against Monaghan was a major talking point over the Easter holidays, Sheerin has been the major score getter and with Shannon Monaghan and Melissa McCann Tyrone have potency and plenty of quality throughout the squad with the likes of Kerri Ann O Hagan , Aimee Arnold, Cailin McCann and Joanne Barrett al available.

Cavan will start as the favorites but Tyrone are not just making up the numbers this Sunday.
