Donaghmoyne and Carnacon to contest TESCO Homegrown Club Final

HOLDERS Donaghmoyne will meet Carnacon on Sunday, December 1, in the Tesco Homegrown All-Ireland ladies senior club football championship final.

The eagerly anticipated clash is a repeat of last year’s decider – a game Monaghan and Ulster standard bearers Donaghmoyne won by five points.

Donaghmoyne enjoyed a comfortable 2-16 to 0-8 victory against Clare and Munster champions Banner in Corofin in Sunday’s semi-final.

Banner registered four early wides before Donaghmoyne took complete control as they opened up a 2-9 to 0-3 half-time lead.

Monaghan star Cathriona McConnell scored the game’s opening goal as Donaghmoyne established a 1-7 to 0-3 advantage.

Niamh Callan added a second goal before the break and Donaghmoyne were 12 points clear at the midway point and out of sight.

Donaghmoyne had Fiona Courtney sinbinned in the second half but they still managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Meanwhile, Mayo and Connacht champions Carnacon survived a huge second half fightback from Mountmellick Sarsfields in Ballintubber on Sunday.

2011 All-Ireland winners Carnacon booked their place in a fourth successive final with a 4-8 to 3-10 victory against their Laois opponents.

At half-time, Carnacon were 4-1 to 0-5 clear but Mountmellick hit three late goals to ensure a nervy finish for the winners.

Cora Staunton, recently honoured with a ninth All Star award, netted in the 4th minute for Carnacon but Mountmellick were ahead early on by 0-5 to 1-0.

Before half-time, Carnacon struck with a glut of goals as Staunton, who finished with 2-7, added a second in the 28th minute before Aoife Brennan bagged a brace in stoppage time.

Carnacon ran riot despite having Caroline McGing sin-binned in the 23rd minute but despite the concession of four first half goals, Mountmellick refused to crumble.

Meaghan Dunne scored goals in the 48th and 55th minutes before Claire Conlon netted a penalty deep in stoppage time.

Nine points up at the three-quarter point, Carnacon were left hanging on for a slender one-point victory.
