Inter Provincial Championships 2009

Leinster kick off their 2009 Inter Provincial Championship campaign against Connacht on Saturday next, in Kinnegad GAA club.
The Leinster Management team of Bill Daly, Sean McMullin, Brendan Dardis and Peter Clarke have put together a strong squad to contest this year’s competition, in fact all four Provinces are bringing a wealth of talented players to the Westmeath venue in search of the Mick Talbot cup.
Leinster last won the Inter Provincial championship back in 2006 when they beat Ulster, who are the current holders of the Mick Talbot cup, and having taken a quick glance at the Ulster squad, its quiet clear that they are aiming to retain their inter provincial title for the second year in succession.
Leinster’s 2008 Inter Provincial championship was one that they would prefer to forget; with only three provinces competing, they struggled against Munster in their first round game, and while they upped their performance against a strong Ulster side, they were unable to book a place in the finals.
This year Dublins Denise Masterson will captain a strong Leinster line-up, that includes players from eight Counties into their first round game against Connacht, which throws in at 11am sharp. Connacht did not compete in last years Inter Provincial championship, but they come into this years competition with a strong panel of players including Seven of the Roscommon side that beat Wicklow in the Bord Gais Energy Division 3 NFL final. However Bill Daly and company will be taking one game at a time, and they are confident that Leinster will not be found wanting in their first round game against Connacht on Saturday next.
Munster and Ulster will go head to head in the second, first round game, with the strong Munster squad including twelve players off the reigning TG4 All Ireland and the Bord Gais Energy division one NFL winning Cork side. Munster will be looking to reverse last years Inter Provincial Championship final result, when Ulster ran out convincing winners on a score line of 6-11 to 2-9.
