Ballyroe Heights Senior Ladies Championship 1st Round

Sliabh Luacra 6-11 Laune Rangers 4-14.

The 2011 Ballyroe Heights Hotel Senior Ladies County Championship got off to a very positive start with the opening tie of the competition on Sunday last. Sliabh Luchra and Laune Rangers served up a real treat of football at JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin. The new combination team of Castleisland and Scartaglin held out for a 6-11 to 4-14 victory over the current County League Division 1 champions having led at half time 3-5 to 2-7. Of the starting 30 players on the field 22 had previously or currently played at inter county level and the fact that both teams were happy to play free scoring football with no defensive devices made for a real high scoring and flee flowing game. The key moment of the game came in the 9th minute of the second half when Lorraine Scanlon was brought down for a penalty. Mags O’Donoghue tucked away the penalty with real skill. She had the ball in the net again within 30 seconds of that score and when Joanne Brosnan hit the net again a minute later, Sliabh Luacra has suddenly established a 6-8 to 3-9 lead. Laune Rangers fought back well, inspired by their inter county quartet of Sarah Houlihan, Steffi Corkery, Patrice Dennehy and Edel Murphy who contributed the bulk of their side’s scores. However it was not be for Rangers and they will now await the draw for the next round. Both sides will feel however that on the basis of this showing that they will have a role to play yet in the destiny of the 2011 Ladies County Senior title. Scores: Sliabh Luachra Mags O’Donoghue 3-3, Mary Helihy 1-1, Mary O Keefe 1-3 Joanne Brosnan 1-0 Leanne Mangan 0-2 Lorraine Scanlon 0-1 Aisling Leonard 0-1 Laune Rangers Sarah Houlihan 0-8, Steffi Corkey 1-2, Patrice Dennehy 1-1, Edel Murphy 1-1 Klara O’Sullivan 1-0, Sarah Jane Joy 0-1 Amy Foley 0-1

Radio Na Gaelteachta Cup

On Saturday Chorca Dhuibhne made home advantage count as they beat Piarsaigh Na Drommada in Lispole. The Cup was presented by Jack Mhuirearctaigh to Aoife Kavanagh and the Radio Na Gaelteachta Cup will rest in the west for 2011. This tournament featured four ladies teams from around the county. Castlegregory and Daingean Uí Chúis failed to make the final on this occasion leaving the battle for honours to the girls from the West and South. Corca Dhuibhne really showed their strength in the final. They were powered by their inter county star Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh at full forward who finished the final with a personal tally of 8 points four of which came from play. This was a superb team performance however and there were many others who impressed on the day for the champions. Ciara Ní Shea was outstanding at full back while Neasa Ní Luabhaing did superbly at centre back and even found time to venture forward and score a cracking goal. In midfield Neasa McKenna and Roisín Ní Chonchúir also ruled the roost but it was in the forward line that the West Kerry girls held all the aces. Fiona Ní Chathaín scored 3-2, Cliona Ní Cathaín scored 2-1 while Katie Ní Mhuircheartaigh grabbed three good points from play. Dromid also had some impressive performers on the day.

Eileen Garvey in goal made a number of very good saves. Orla Shea, Louise Curran and Sarah Shea were very sound in defence while Fiona O’Connor worked hard in midfield. Niamh O’Sullivan Rock and goalscorers Amy Turner and Johanna O’Connor were sharpest up front.

Paddy White was the man in the middle and added to the overall quality of the final by letting the game flow. Jeaic O Muircheartaigh from sponsors Radio Na Gaeltachta and Kerry Ladies County Board Chairman Donal Barry were on hand to present the Comortas Peil Na mBan cup to Corca Dhuibhne captain Aoife Ní Chíobhan after the game.

Chairman Donal Barry said “ we are grateful to Jack and Radio Na Gaeltachta for their sponsorship, Lispole for the use of their facilities and the teams for making themselves available. Next season will have Dromid hosting the competition. Fixtures and the sponsor will be meeting and discussing ideas on how to strengthen the competition next season but I thank Dromid and Chorca Dhuibhne for their efforts on Saturday”.
