Lades GaGa is a 6 week recreational programme for Ladies Gaelic Football organised in third level colleges and universities.

Programme Aims

• To increase the number of females participating in Ladies Gaelic Football at 3rd level, by encouraging students to engage in an active and healthy lifestyle, with weekly opportunities to participate in the sport

• To help build stronger Gaelic Communities at 3rd Level by increasing the number of females involved

What does the Programme Involve?

The programme involves a 6 week coaching period (through fun games) followed with an opportunity to play mini games for one hour per week through an intra-mural league.

Please note:

• The Intra Mural league is optional and Colleges may continue with weekly coaching sessions

The intra mural league could be organised through teams selected on the evening depending on numbers available or opened up to teams to enter a non-competitive on campus league. The nature of the league would depend on the Institution and the interest during the 6wks. Club players (non-College team players) would be encouraged to assist new players in learning the skills of the games, as these participants would naturally want to be in a position to have plenty of participants for the League.

Who is Programme for?

The programme is aimed at the following:

• Players who have never played Ladies Gaelic Football before

• Club Players who do not want to play competitive football with the College Team but like to play on a recreational and non competitive basis

Getting started…

There are 8 steps which need to be followed in establishing this programme of activity on your campus:

• Step 1: Appoint a Co-ordinator

• Step 2: Contact LGFA for promotional material

• Step 3: Agree start date and source facilities for same

• Step 4: Promote the Programme through as many avenues as possible

• Step 5: Source the coach and contact LGFA for the coaching resource booklet

• Step 6: Begin the 6 week coaching sessions

• Step 7: Liaise with the group and the coaches in relation to running weekly on campus non-competitive leagues (optional). If this not an option then College can continue with weekly coaching sessions for a certain timeframe.

• Step 8: Organise a non-competitive Mini Cluster Blitz with other Colleges if applicable

Stages

Step 1: Appoint a Coordinator

Role of the Coordinator:

o Communication with National/Provincial LGFA Development Officer

o Promotion and recruitment

o Source coaches and/or conduct the coaching

o Update participants on activities

o Source facilities and equipment (use the Ladies Football College team equipment)

Step 2: Contact LGFA for promotional material

• The promotion material includes Posters and Flyers with registration sheets on the back of the flyers.

Step 3: Agree start date and source facilities for same

The start date and venue can be included on the promotional material.

It could be organised to coincide on the same night as the Ladies Gaelic Football team training – to increase the opportunities of socialising, help build a broader Club ethos, and possibly filter potential players into the University/IT teams. For example, the Ladies GAGA programme could run from 6-7pm and the ladies football team training from 7-8.30pm.

Step 4: Promote the Programme through as many avenues as possible

Promotional ideas:

o Facebook page

o Friends and class mates of current members of the college Gaelic games club-Football, Hurling, Camogie

o Other clubs and societies in the college

o Fresher’s Week, Clubs’ and Societies’ Day

o Contact societies that may have a high proportion of overseas students in their membership

o Canteens, sports halls, open areas

o Some colleges have TV screen advertising events; this can be a great way to promote the programme

Step 5: Source the coach and access the coaching pack from LGFA

The coaching pack contains LGFA skill cards and 6 sample sessions that the coach can follow where the key skills of the game are addressed through fun games and activities. This pack can be used exclusively by the coach or as a guide.

Step 6: Begin the 6 week coaching sessions;

o Keep a database of all contact details

o Ensure all participants complete the registration sheet

o Keep an attendance record

Step 7: Liaise with the group and the coaches in relation to running weekly on campus non-competitive league.

• This is optional.

• College can continue with weekly coaching sessions for a specific timeframe if do not want to introduce on campus non-competitive leagues

Step 8: Organise a non-competitive Mini Blitz with other Colleges if applicable

• Dependant on numbers of Colleges participating in the Programme in Province
