Waterford 4-10 Laois 2-5 Laois Intermediate Footballers went down to their third defeat in a row on Sunday when they failed to stay the pace against a well drilled Waterford outfit in Ratheniska. The defeat leaves Laois propping up the Division 2 Table and while they have still four games remaining, to rescue their season and avoid relegation, the alarm bells are certainly ringing. The home side started the game well, and matched their opponents in most sectors, but a failure to convert some decent scoring opportunities was again to prove to be the team’s Achilles Heel. Clare Conlon slotted over two early scores, from play and a free but these were cancelled out by Sinead Ryan and Eimear Fennell for the Deise. The Laois midfielders Jane Moore and Joyce Dunne enjoyed more than their share of possession throughout the opening half and Dunne’s halftime departure, due to injury, was a loss to her team. The backs, led by the excellent Mags McEvoy, along with Anna Healy, Laura Nerney and Mary Cotter defended well and their provided good cove for Fiona Kelly between the posts. The O’Moores were performing well in most areas and a Noirin Kirwan point levelled the match at the halfway point of the first half. Emma Lawlor then rounded her marker to find the net and put her side into a three point lead. Unfortunately this was a good as it got and Waterford, though Mairead Wall, Roisin Tobin and Ryan made it ‘all square’ for the second time. A Liz Devine goal left the visitors ahead 1-6 to 1-3 at the break. Ciara Burke and Ciara Hughes entered the fray and Laois responded well to an early Waterford point as some excellent work by Laura Maher and Caoimhe Simms set up Emma Lawlor for her second goal leaving a single point between the teams. The introduction of Aileen Wall seemed to trigger a Waterford fight back and from there until the end they added 3 goals and 3 points to run out comfortable winners.
