Monaghan 4-08 Laois 4-19

Laois advanced to the semi-final stages and a meeting with Mayo after a very convincing win in Killanny, but only after a massive scare early in the game. It was the home side that opened the brighter and led by 3-03 to 0-04 after the opening quarter with Voreen Quigley (2) and Diane Dempsey all finding the net. Monaghan then suffered a severe blow with the inspirational Niamh Kindlon suffering a bad leg injury in a tackle that led to a Monaghan penalty, Niamh having to be carried off and out of the game.

Worse for Monaghan was to follow with Quigley’s penalty going wide. Jenny Greenan streched their lead to 9 before Laois started to roll. Some wonderfull points from player of the match Tracey Lawlor who finished with 2-08, Sue Ramsbottom and Mary Keogh and a goal from Lawlor helped Laois into the lead with 1-07 without reply. Monaghan retook the lead on the half time whistle with a goal from Aisling Tierney to lead by 4-04 to 1-11.

Points from Gemma O’Connor, Lawlor and Ramsbottom put Laois in the lead prior to their second goal from Kathleen O’Reilly after a mistake from the monaghan keeper. Further points from Linda Brennan and Keogh for Laois kept them in the acendancy with Monaghan just about staying in the game with Aisling Tierney and Therese McNally finding getting points for the home team.

Laois with lawlor in particular were lethal in front of goal and finished the game off with two goals in a minute from Lawlor and Keogh to run out deserved winners but the scoreline not doing home side any favours.
