Monaghan and Dublin Remain Unbeaten

Cork v Monaghan - Tesco Ladies National Football League Round 3

Round 3 of the TESCO Homegrown National Football Leagues has been a significant weekend as the leagues begin to take shape. There are now 3 counties level at the top of the Division 1 table and it is no surprise that they are Monaghan, Dublin and Cork.

Monaghan put down an important marker for the rest of the season as they claimed a victory away to defending champions, Cork, thanks to a 2-09 to 2-12 victory in Mallow yesterday. Goals from Ciara McAnespie and Catriona McConnell were the difference between the two sides. Dublin also scored an important victory over rivals Mayo in Ballyheane to join Cork and Monaghan at the top of the table.  Mayo remain in fourth but have played one match more than Kerry and Laois who will meet this weekend in their postponed fixture. Tyrone scored an important victory over Donegal yesterday thanks to a 4 goal haul from Gemma Begley which leaves Donegal rooted to the bottom of the table after three matches.

In Division 2 the big winners were Westmeath who maintained their 100% record with a huge win away to Down. The Westmeath women delivered a 5 goal, 5 star performance en route to their position at the summit of the table. Galway are the promotion favourites which they emphasised with a 6 goal rout of Fermanagh. Meath will be delighted with a hard fought victory over their great rivals, Kildare, winning by a single point in a fantastic match. The final game saw a surprising win for Cavan over Clare, especially as Cavan had struggled up to this stage. Kildare and Fermanagh are the two teams rooted to the bottom of the table but Kildare will take confidence in knowing that they have two games in hand over the other teams.

Waterford maintained their unbeaten start to the season but they were pushed all the way by a fierce challenge from Tipperary with only a point seperating the two sides at the final whistle. Armagh maintained their fine start to the season making it 2 out of 2 with a big win over Wexford. Offaly have found it difficult to adjust to life in Division 3 after their promotion last year as they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of sligo to leave them joint bottom of the table with the team they defeated in last year’s TG4 All Ireland Junior Final, Wexford. Leitrim are the third team with a 100% record in the division which they maintained with a strong performance in defeating Longford 2-12 to 0-7.
