ALL IRELAND LADIES FINAL 2008

TYRONE MINORS

Paddy Hunter

Tyrone minor manager Martina Dillon kept herself busy at the weekend ahead of next Mondays all Ireland minor final against Dublin. The talented Tyrone supremo who along with Rory McCann has guided Tyrone back to a first minor decider in eight years was on the line in the Tyrone senior final on Saturday and again at Clones on Sunday in an Intermediate clash. It was a busy weekend for the referee  but it afforded her a chance to keep an eye on at least one of her players ahead of next weeks national decider. Carrickmore defender Roisin Rafferty helped her side to an 11th Tyrone title and thankfully for the Tyrone minor manager come linesperson there was no injury issues from that game.

Dungannon based Dillon who took over the Tyrone role last year and delivered an Ulster title has still the nucleolus of that squad at her disposal this term. The Ulster crown was collected again and a win over Kerry and Ulster rivals Monaghan sets up a meeting with the Dubs.

Last year at the quarter final stage Dublin proved too strong but Dillon remains upbeat,

“ Our girls are older now we have nine from the starting 15 last year still playing and 15 in total from the squad, we have lost the likes of Christiane Hunter and Neamh Woods who are overage now but we have players who I  Know can deliver”

Tyrone actually played Dublin recently revealed Dillon,

“ Yes we played them in a friendly, we hadn’t everyone available to us because of club commitments but I think we learnt  quite a bit from that encounter, we had the opportunity to play them and it was worthwhile for us, they wont have seen too much from us but I found it very useful, we will use it to our advantage next Monday”

Tyrone  have not been key players in the all Ireland series at this level despite having some superb players, they did annex one all Ireland minor crown be default at the start of the decade but says Martina it’s been too long,

“ When you look at some of the players that have played for Tyrone down the years and missed out, we must try and claim the title, all Ireland finals don’t come around that often, you must grab the opportunity with both hands, we will certainly try and do that at Cavan”

The Games live on TG4 next Monday at 1-45, it’s a bank holiday in the Republic but not for Tyrone,  the Tyrone manager who still plays herself for Aodh Ruadh is not phased by the strange timing of it,

“ It wouldn’t matter to us if it was a Sunday night in the back of beyond, it’s an all Ireland final and we are happy to be in it, we will have the supporters with us whatever the time or place, we just can’t wait”

Injuries have all but cleared up too for the Tyrone side after an horrendous run of injuries,

“ We lost Sarah Owens and Stacey McCann with broken arms and Shauneen Ferrity damaged her shoulder and you have to feel for those players who miss out, the older girls from last year are still very much in my mind too, it’s been a team effort since Rory and myself took over, a building towards the all Ireland”

Dillon and McCann have drafted in a couple of new girls as players got injured, they all had under 14 and under 16 experience so it wasn’t a big transition for them but surely a step up to an all Ireland final will be a massive occasion,

“ It will, it will, we have prepared right though, everyone knows the job they have to do and we certainly have the quality, Shannon Quinn at midfield, Clodagh Poyntz up front and goalkeeper Sinead McVeigh all members of the senior squad but key performers of this side too, we are confident, it will be very difficult but we are hungry for an all Ireland title.

Tyrones young players will attempt to secure a history making all Ireland minor title this coming Monday at Breffni Park. A strong squad have been together since the start of the year and of course 15 of the current squad were members of the Ulster winning side of 2007, these are the players who carry Tyrone and Ulsters hopes against Dublin
