Boden complete League & Championship Double

Boden complete League & Championship Double

Current Dublin Senior Championship winners Boden took on Naomh Mearnog/St Sylvesters the reigning Division 1 league champions in Portmarnock.
Mearnog/Syls required a win to hold onto their league title, while a draw would be sufficient result for Boden to take away the cup.

Both teams are quite familiar with each other, with several league titles between them in recent years. Mearnog/Slys have also pushed Boden close in recent Championship finals, so a thriller was on the cards.

Boden weathered the storm in the first half as Mearnog/slys battered the Boden posts with the help of strong wind behind them. At half time Mearnog/Syls were only up by 1 point but would have to play into a strong wind in the second half.

On the restart Mearnog/Slys hit three points without reply leaving the score 9 points to 5. At this point Boden called on all their inner strength similar to that belief that the “All Blacks” posses to pull the game back around in their favour. It’s this inner belief and spirit that will see Boden look to take 10 Dublin senior football championships in a row in 2009.

With 10 minutes to go, Boden were up by a single point. Mearnog/Slys hit the woodwork when a goal looked on. This set back did not deter the Mearngo/Syls team as they went seeking a win against a strong breeze and an excellent Boden squad.
With two minutes remaining on the clock Boden were feeling the pressure being asserted, the Boden management instructed their girls to hold onto possession of the ball rather than attack, this was to ensure Mearnog/Slys could not get their hands on it.

Boden ran out eventual winners by two points on a windy, cold Saturday in late November. The rather large on looking crowd did not feel the cold as they were warmed by a riveting game of football played at a remarkable high intensity for this time of year.

In his post match speech Dublin Ladies Chairman Camillus Kilpatrick praised both teams for a great game of football and acknowledged the fact that both teams were the most consistent performing teams in recent times in Dublin Football. Camillus also asked the girls & clubs present to support the newly appointed Dublin Senior County management team and ensure that Dublin build on last years success’s at county level.

Best for Boden was Gemma Fay and for Mearnog/Slys it was Orla Colreavy.
