Laois v Donegal (Bord Gáis Division 1A, Ref: Tony Clarke (Dublin) )
Laois did not have the best of luck in last years division 1A NFL campaign, drawing with Kerry ( 2-11 to 2-11), losing out by the narrowest of margins to Tyrone(0-7 to 0-8) and Armagh (1-7 to1-8) whilst clocking up just one win over Wexford (5-19 to 0-5), so they will be hoping for the rub of the green in 2009.
This season Laois will once again represent Leinster in division 1A of the Bord Gáis NFL, in their first outing they will play host to Donegal in Mountmellick Co. Laois (1/02/09), the Donegal side competed in division 2B last season with wins over Fermanagh, and Tipperary whilst drawing with Down, and were beaten by a single point by Clare in the division 2 NFL final (2-10 to 0-15). The North west side will prove to be a good test for the O’Moore girls, who will be strengthened with a number of players from their strong minor squad this season.
Cork v Kildare (Bord Gáis Division 1B, Ref: Keith Delahunty (Tipperary) )
Kildare make the long journey south to C.I.T on February 1st to take on reigning Div1 and all Ireland champions Cork under the leadership of Mary O Connor.
This will be a tough assignment for the Lily Whites, in the same fixture last season three goals separated the sides in Corks favour ( 1-6 to 3-9).
Monaghan v Dublin (Bord Gáis Division 1B, Ref: Eugene O Hare (Down) )
Dublin travel north to Inniskeen, on Sunday next to take on Monaghan in their first round game in the Bord Gáis National football league. The reigning Leinster senior champions will be looking to notch up their first win as they launch a serious bid for both the league and championship titles this season.
Wexford v Waterford (Bord Gáis Division 2A, Ref: Garry Owen McMahon (Dublin))
Wexford go head to head with near neighbours Waterford in Kennedy Park, New Ross, the model county have slipped from division 1A to 2A after a poor season in 2008, While the deise girls have already played a competitive game this season, when they were beaten by Meath in a relegation play-off game last Sunday. Wexford need a win on Sunday next to lay a good foundation to build on for the 2009 season.
Westmeath v Tipperary (Bord Gáis Division 2A, Ref: Michael John O Keefee (Cork) )
The girls from the lake county will take on Tipperary in Cahir in their first round game in the Bord Gáis national football league, Westmeath go in to this game on a high after retaining their intermediate championship status after beating Limerick last Sunday.
Longford v Down (Bord Gáis Division 2B, Ref: Viv Hardiman (Roscommon) ).
Longford play host to Down on Sunday next, and they will be looking to get their Bord Gáis NFL campaign off to a better start this season. In the same fixture last season Longford failed to score, and in fairness to Longford it was not one of their best seasons with only one win in the league, however they did have success winning the Leinster Minor ‘B’ final with Tara McKeon voted player of the match, hopefully Longford will get their 2009 season off to winning start on Sunday next.
Limerick v Louth (Bord Gáis Division 3A, Ref: Richard O Connor (Tipperary) ).
Louth make the long journey to the South west to take on Limerick in Knocklong, The Shannonsiders were in action on Sunday last, losing out to Westmeath in a relegation play-off game, and may have a point to prove as they face their second Leinster side in a week. Like Longford, Louth should have a number of good players coming up through the minor ranks this year.
Roscommon v Offaly (Bord Gáis Division 3A, Ref: Mel Kenny (Mayo) )
In a reversal of last years fixture, Offaly travel to St Brigids, Kiltoom to take on Roscommon in their first round game, and they will be looking to reverse last years result, when the faithful county were well beaten on that occasion.
Antrim v Wicklow (Bord Gáis Division 3B, Ref: Gavin Corrigan (Down) )
Wicklow start their Bord Gáis NFL campaign with an away trip to Falls Park, Belfast to take on Antrim, Wicklow have a new management team in place, Robert Hollingsworth and Michael Broderrick will team up with Louise Allen and Mick O’Rourke to hopefully steer the garden county to their first NFL final since 2005. But first the reigning Leinster junior champs have to improve on last years NFL results when they only won one game out of five, and that was against Antrim in Aughrim. Hopefully the Wicklow girls will collect all points on Sunday next to kick start what I’m sure will be an exciting year in the Garden County.
Kilkenny v Derry (Bord Gáis Division 3B, Ref: Tommy McSorley (Tyrone) )
Kilkenny will travel about 300Km to Lissan, to meet Derry in their first round game in the Bord Gáis sponsored NFL. In the same encounter last season the cats had five points to spare over the oak leaf county, and it was the only NFL defeat that Derry suffered, so this weekend game has all the ingredients for an exciting close game.
Best of luck to all teams playing in this weekend in the 2009 Bord Gáis National Football League.(Mick Forde Leinster PRO.)
