Cabinteely Ladies set World Record in Gaelic Football

Cabinteely Ladies set World Record in Gaelic Football

Cabinteely Ladies Football in association with Cabinteely
GAA has achieved a world first in Gaelic Football. On Saturday
28th June 2003 at 11.01 pm, Cabinteely GAA (Ladies Football
section, which was founded in 1997) set a new world record.

How?

Cabinteely GAA has held the longest Gaelic Football game
ever played. Throw-in took place at 11am on Saturday 28th
June 2003. Mary Hanafin TD, Minister of State at the Department
of the Taoiseach and Government Chief Whip, threw in the
ball to get the game underway. The 12 hour barrier was broken
at 11.01 pm and celebration of this world record achievement
started immediately the final whistle was blown. The final
score between the two Cabinteely GAA teams was 232 goals
298 points to 231 goals and 302 points.

The idea for this event developed from an initial concept
by creative genius and avid club supporter, Aidan Bracken.
It was enthusiastically taken on by the entire club and
the targets set were
1) Create a new world record to a standard that will achieve
listing in the Guinness Book of Records
2) Raise the profile of Ladies Football in Ireland, particularly
in Dublin
3) Increase awareness of Cabinteely Ladies Football in its
catchment area
4) Increase participation of girls and women in field sport
activities
5) Get funding for the club’s activities through sponsorship
and other related initiatives.

Cabinteely GAA believe they have met the requirements to
be listed in the Guinness Book of Records – ratification
is expected to follow shortly. Cabinteely GAA very much
appreciate the generous assistance of primary sponsors of
this event, YAZOO and Castle King Services. Additional sponsorship
from Killiney Court Hotel, Super Valu Shankill and Bradys
Shankill is also acknowledged. The generous assistance of
our GAA colleagues, Cuala club, by their provision of facilities
is gratefully appreciated.
