2007 Clare Junior League Final

Venue:            Lissycasey

Date:               Saturday July 28th

Referee:            Michael Bohannon

The Banner            6 – 6                Miltown St. Joseph’s   1 – 2

Great credit is due to both teams for serving up a very entertaining final in terrible underfoot conditions at a wet and windy Furoor pitch in Lissycasey on Saturday evening.  Both the Banner and Miltown entered their second string teams for this Junior league competition and it’s testimony to the strength in depth of both clubs, and indeed the work they are putting into the game, that these two teams reached the final. Credit also to Shannon Gaels, Crusheen and Cooraclare who fielded second teams in this competition.

The Banner were just that little bit too crafty for Miltown on Saturday even though it took them a long time to assert their supremacy on the scoreboard.  With wind, rain and very wet underfoot conditions to contend with both teams found it difficult to settle and many of the early passages of play ended with nought to show thanks to the greasy slippery ball.  The Banner finally opened the scoring with a point from corner forward Naomi Carroll on eleven minutes and were dominating the general play.  They were rocked however four minutes later when Niamh Pender cut through their defence to lay on a ball for Katie Curtin to shoot to the Banner net to give Miltown a shock 1-0 to 0-1 lead on the quarter hour.  This score stung the Banner into action and another Naomi Carroll point followed shortly after.  Indeed Naomi was to prove a handful for the Miltown defence for the remainder of the half as she tagged on a further two goals and a point before the break.  Mary Allan added a further point for the winners to leave the half time score The Banner 2 – 4 Miltown 1-0.

Wind assisted Miltown opened brightly in the second half and had two quick points.  They couldn’t maintain their momentum however and the Ennis side began to take control again.  Naomi Carroll got through for her hat trick on forty minutes and when Louise Woods netted four minutes later the game was over as a contest.  Further goals were added by Aoife Davoren and Meave McCarthy to give the Banner a comfortable margin of victory at the end.

Following the game chairman of the Clare Ladies Football Board James Lafferty presented the trophy to the winning captain Sharon Bradley of the Banner.  Best for the winners were Naomi Carroll up front and Marian Conway, Rachel McGann, Laurie Ryan and Caoimhe O’Dea in defence.  Youngsters Katie Curtin and Niamh Pender showed well for Miltown.

The Banner: Sharon Bradley (Capt.), Laurie Ryan, Rachel McGann, Marian Conway, Ciara McCarthy, Niamh Cavanagh, Rebecca Coughlin, Niamh Martin, Louise Woods (1-0), Caoimhe O’Dea, Aoife Davoren (1-1), Kim Moloney, Naiomi Carroll (3-4), Aidín Shannon, Niamh Walsh.

Subs: Mary Allan (0-1) for Ciara McCarthy, Meave McCarthy (1-0) for Aidín Shannon.
