Cork Leave it Late Against Galway

2015 Cork v Galway-54

Cork 1-14

Galway 3-07

Cork are proving to be real value for money as their last three fixtures have either been won or lost by a single point. Galway were the visitors to Mourneabbey in the first match in Round 4 of the TESCO National Football League and they might light of their underdog tag as they took the game to the champions from the first whistle.

Cork came out of the blocks quickly as they raced into a three point to one lead but Tracey Leonard produced the first big moment of the match as she goaled for the visitors to nudge them into the lead. Cork responded well though with points coming from Ciara O’Sullivan, Geraldine O’Flynn and the excellent Eimear Scally. However, Galway showed their character again to respond with the last score of the half through Annette Collins to hold a slender one point lead.

The second half proved to be a drama filled exhibition between these two sides. Edel Concannon has been one of the top performers in the league to date and she was the one to get the next big score of the match as she netted again for Galway to edge them further in front. However, the other form forward in the league wears the red of Cork and it was Grace Kearney that scored the goal in reply for the champions pushing them one point ahead. In a game that ebbed and flowed all the way to the final whistle Galway hit the front again as Tracey Leonard struck for another goal for the tribes. However, Cork would not be denied as Eamonn Ryan again made use of his bench introducing Aine O’Sullivan who put Cork back on terms and it was fellow sub Rhona Ní Bhuachalla who stepped up to slot over what would be the winning point in an absorbing contest.

Cork have now returned to the top of the table as they leapfrog Galway who now sit second until Sunday at least but both sides are very likely to be there or thereabouts when the top 4 are confirmed at the end of the season.
