Down Ladies Fixtures/Results and Round-up

Championship

Bredagh beat Bryansford and booked their place in the semi-final of the Senior Championship. The Belles dominated the game throughout and the result was never in doubt. On this type of form Bredagh will be hard to stop and they will fancy their chances against any opposition. It was very much a different story in Hilltown where 3 in a row winners Clonduff were under the cosh from a rampant Downpatrick outfit for large parts of the game. Clonduff trailed 0-05 to 0-01 at half-time and it took the positional switch of Michaela Downey to full forward to rescue the yellow’s season. 3 goals in a ten minute spell from Clonduff, the final one which just trickled over the line secured the win. Downpatricks performance really deserved something and a draw probably would have been a fairer result but Clonduffs persistence at the end coupled with a little rub of the green saw them advance into the next round. This result further backs up the suspicion that Clonduff are not the same force they were a few seasons ago and clubs are no longer apprehensive of making the journey to play them. Saval disposed of a lack lustre Rostrevor outfit. The dominance of the Saval girls from the throw-in was so significant that the reds didn’t manage a score in the sixty minutes of football. The big result of the night was Carryduff’s ten point win over Annaclone. The Belfast girls were in fine attacking form notching up three goals enroute to an emphatic win. This was their first ever appearance in championship football at senior level and the manner of the win will give them a great boost. It also ensured they retained their 100% record in 2009.

In the Intermediate Championship Ballymartin overcame a gallant Loughinisland side in a much closer game than expected. The lilywhites will fancy their chances in this competition but they will need to up their performace in the next round if they are to make an impact. Kilcoo welcomed Shamrocks to Owen Roe park and they put in a five star performance to overcome the Newry side in a high scoring game. Over in St. Mary’s Park Burren looked to have defeated a much fancied Bright with the game already in injury time, a long penetrating ball into the Burren rearguard found its way to the net and a draw was the end result. There are no details at the time of writing regarding the replay.

In the Junior Championship, favourites Mayobridge had a walkover against Clonduff as they were unable to field while the St. Johns and Tullylish game was called off. Teconnaught as expected had an easy passage through to the semi’s with a good win over Saul. At the time of writing there was no result available for the Aughlisnafin and St. Michaels game.

League

On Saturday night we have a full round of Intermediate and Junior fixtures. In the Intermediate league Ballymartin will travel to Bredagh and they will need a victory if they are to remain in contention at the top. Bredagh at home can be a difficult fixture so the lilywhites should travel with caution. Burren will host Carryduff and the South Down side who are in a rich vein of form will certainly not be overawed by anyone. Carryduff fresh from their first ever senior championship win will be in buoyant mood but will the victory have left anyhting in the tank? Saturday night will tell the tale. Bright travel to Shamrocks and they won’t look forward to the journey. Shamrocks are playing well and will fancy their chances. Bright on the other hand are stuttering of late and i won’t be surprised if they come up short in Pairc Esler. Kilcoo travel to Loughinisland and they appear to have turned the corner and are slowly coming back into form, its hard to see anything other than a win for the magpies. In the Junior League St. Johns should take both points against St. Michaels. Drumgath and Saul is likely to be a close affair, they drew in their previous meeting but purely on form i fancy Saul to take the points. Mayobridge will host Tullylish and this will be their sternest test to date. Tullylish can mix it with the best on their day and they would love to take that 100% record from the sky blues. Both teams played out an interesting and high scoring game last time out. On form Mayobridge have it to lose but i am going to plump for an upset and a Tullylish win. Teconnaught travel to the Fin and they should pick up another two points though Aughlisnafin have been improving of late, i don’t think it will be enough to cause an upset.

On Sunday evening there is a round of senior fixtures. Annaclone host Saval and its hard to see Saval slipping up. Annaclone bowed out of the championship last week and they will need to up their game if they are to retain their senior status. Bryansford travel to Clonduff with both sides not playing at their best. This is a difficult one to call but home advantage might be enough to swing it. Castlewellan travel to Rostrevor and they should take both the points. In the other match Bredagh host Downpatrick. The hoops are playing really well but Bredagh are the team in form. This game should be open but the belles probably have enough in reserve to advance with both points in the bag.

U-16 League

Teconnaught meet Downpatrick and this should be a close one with a draw a distinct possiblity. Carryduff visit Bosco and if they travel at full strength then i expect them to bag both points. Ballymartin host Burren and the lilywhites at home will want to maintain their 100% record. This is a potential banana skin and they will need to be at their best to secure the win. Bredagh travel to Bryansford and this game should be close with Bredagh probably just shading it. Annaclone are playing well and the visit of Shamrocks should secure another two points. Saval should have too much experience for Carryduff with another win forecast for the South Down side. Rostrevor meet Clonduff and this game is likely to go to the wire with no more than a kick of a ball between both sides expected at the finish. Saul host Bright and they should maintain their challenge at the top with a hard fought victory.
