Dublin Maintain Under 16 Dominance

Dublin produced a championship winning second half performance in Saturdays Leinster A Final against Meath in Clane. This was Dublin’s 8th year in a row to top Leinster at u16 level.

The game started off in the usual frenetic fashion and it was almost ten minutes into the game before a score was registered. A point for Dublin.

Meath despite being without three regular starters due to serious injuries were looking good. The full forward line was giving the Dublin backs plenty of thinking to do. Dublin would be under pressure for most of the first half. But despite having the bulk of possession a lot of chances went a begging for Meath. The wind was causing plenty of trouble for both sides. Meath would come to rue these missed chances towards the end of the game.

At the break Meath appeared to be in control and when the referee blew the half time whistle Meath would be 1 – 05 to 3 to the good.

The second half started with a bang as Jodi Egan popped the ball into the back of the Meath net about four minutes after the restart. Meath did reply shortly afterwards with a goal of their own shortly after courtesy of Orlagh Lally!

The Dublin girls seemed to up the tempo and with about forty seven minutes on the clock Dublin took the lead for the first time. Meath just couldn’t cope with the onslaught and when Dublin hit two goals in quick succession one a penalty, this seemed to knock out whatever the Meath girls had left in the tank. This seemed to be the start of the end for Meath but true to their usual fighting spirit they never gave up until the final whistle.

It was a tough lesson to learn for Meath. But no doubt they will come back stronger the next time.
