Dublin V Galway Match Report

Bord Gáis Energy
Ladies National Football League
DUBLIN 1-9 GALWAY 2-6

Dublin shared the spoils after surviving a stern test from Galway on Sunday last in Naomh Mearnóg Portmarnock, the home side will not be happy with their performance, but they did continue to battle and their efforts were awarded when Sinead Ahern’s rocket like shot was dropped by Tina Hughes in the Galway goals, Dublin’s number twenty eight Orla Egan was quickest to react, to fire the ball to the back of the Galway net to draw the sides level on the day.
Dublin went in at the break with a two point advantage (0-7 to 1-2), but Gerry McGill and Co. will be concerned that the Jackies only managed to notch up two points, the first after seventeen minutes and a last minute goal in the second period, while conceding one goal and four points in the same period. In fairness to the Dubs, Galway’s defence was in top form, and despite going down to fourteen players twice in the game, the Tribeswomen were unlucky not to have collected all three points from this game.
Dublin’s top scorer Sinead Ahern, with a personal tally of eight points ( five from free’s), registered her first point in the second minute of the game, however fifteen minutes ticked by before Noelle Healy raised the white flag to put Dublin’s second score on the board.
Galway were awarded a penalty in the twelfth minute after referee Des McEnery deemed that the Dublin keeper, Cliodhna O’Connor had fouled Una Carroll, after Sarah Murphy’s shot rebounded off the under side of O’Connor’s crossbar. Carroll and O’Connor went head to head and while O’Connor dived in the right direction she was unable to stop Carroll’s accurate shot.
Dublin took advantage after Galway went down to fourteen players early in the second quarter, when their influential number thirteen Una Carroll was sin-binned, the home side tagging on four points to open a two point gap at the break (0-7 to 1-2).
Points from Niamh Duggan and Julie Anne Russell in the third and sixth minute drew the sides level for the third time in the game, minutes later Dublin’s Lyndsey Davey cutting in from right went one on one with the Galway net minder, but the Skerries Harps club player’s shot went across the Galway goal mouth and wide.
Both sides exchanged scores through out the forth quarter and when Una Carroll hit the back of the Dublin net in the twenty sixth minute, it looked as though the Jackies were staring their first defeat of the season, however Orla Egan kept the Jackie’s unbeaten run intact when she rattled the back of the Galway net, both sides battled hard in the dying seconds to get the winner, but time ran out for both sides. In round three of the Bord Gáis Energy NFL, Dublin travel West to take on Mayo on the 21st of February.
