Fermanagh Ladies V Wexford Ladies

Fermanagh Ladies V Wexford Ladies
Fermanagh Ladies 1-13 Wexford 1-07

Fermanagh Ladies played their second game in the All Ireland Intermediate Championship in Brewster Park on Sunday against Wexford . The game was played in very warm and punishing conditions for both sets of players, but this didn’t stop them serving up a very entertaining game for the paying public .Fermanagh went into the game without the services of Patricia Melanaphy, who is away travelling and Ashling Mc Caughey , who was injured during the week . Nuala Curran and Imelda Mc Govern came into the team and were the only changes from the team that had drawn with Cavan the previous week.
Caroline Little settled the Fermanagh nerves very early on in this game , a Wexford attack was broken up by the Fermanagh defence and the very impressive Donna Maguire played the ball wide to Imelda Mc Govern who fed the forward moving Caroline Little , Caroline beat 2 Wexford defenders and hit an unstoppable shot from 14 metres out to score a Fermanagh goal. It was just the tonic the Fermanagh girls needed to settle the nerves they went on to extent their lead through points from Adele Gallagher (5 minutes) and Ashling Moane (6 minutes) before Wexford got on the score board with pointed frees from Tara Moloney in the 8th and 10th minutes. The Wexford forwards were finding it very hard to make any headway against a Fermanagh defence which was being marshalled by Donna Maguire and team captain Kyla Mc Manus. Tara Maloney was to point another free for the wexford girls before Sharon Little extended the Fermanagh lead further in the 13th minute with a wonderful point of her left foot as Fermanagh looked to capitalise on their defensive and mid-field dominance at the time. The very impressive Ashling Moane was to get the second point of her five point haul on the day in the18th minute and she got her third point in the 23rd minute to leave the score at Fermanagh 1-05 to Wexfords 0-03 . Tara Molon ey was to get Wexfords final score of the half in the 25th minute from another pointed free before Shauna Hamilton pointed for Fermanagh in the 29th minute with a lovely deft finish of her right foot from out on the stand side wing at the scoreboard end of Brewster Park.

Half Time
Fermanagh 1-06 Wexford 0-04

Before the second half had become, Fermanagh had to make a change with Aileen Moane coming on to replace the injured Sharon Little, who is now a doubt for the Ulster Intermediate Final on Saturday in Armagh.
Almost from the throw-in Fermanagh was on the attack with Caroline Little winning the ball and going on a run and feeding the ball into Shauna Hamilton who bet her marker to get one on one with Mary Rose Kelly , we fords goalkeeper, Shauna hit her shot low and hard but the keeper pulled off a good save and managed to clear the rebound out for a 45 . Fermanagh’s intent was clear, to finish the game off early .From the resulting 45, Caroline Little squared the ball to Ashling Moane who returned the ball to Little who pointed then from 35 metres out for the half’s opening score. Shauna Hamilton extended Fermanagh’s lead farther with another point in the 37th minute before Tara Moloney scored Wexford first point of the 2nd hal f. Wexford were still finding it hard to get by the Fermanagh defence to create any goal chances at this stage of the game . Fermanagh extended their lead farther with points from Sharon Mc Govern (40th minute), Ashling Moane (45th minute) and Caroline Little (49th and 52nd minute) . Fermanagh at this stage were completely on top and dominant and led by 1-12 to 0-5.A number of Fermanagh changes had also been made with Anita Newell replacing Imelda Mc Govern and Rachel O’Dolan replacing Tara Hughes for her Senior Inter County debut and finally Eimir Keenan for Sharon Mc Govern.
Tara Moloney pointed for Wexford in the 55th minute from another free but the game was to take a twist with Wexford being awarded a penalty in the 57th minute of the game. Tara Moloney stepped up to face Fermanagh’s goalkeeper, Donna Gilroy, Tara hit the ball low and to Donnas right and Donna saved with her feet but the r ebound fell straight into the path of the still advancing Moloney and she made no mistake from 2 feet out. The score was now 1-12 to 1-06 but with a substantial amount of Injury time to play, Wexford rediscovered their vigour for the game and pushed Fermanagh but the well marshalled Fermanagh defence were not going to give up any farther goal chances and in the 33r minute of the 2nd half Ashling Moane scored her fifth point of the game after soloing from inside her own half to the wexford 21 metre line, Wexfords Sharon Kehoe was to have the final score of the game, with a point in the 35th minute of the half.
The Fermanagh management were delighted with the result and the performance but have a couple of injury worries ahead of the Ulster final on Saturday night in Armagh.
The Fermanagh management and players would again like to thank the Fermanagh Men’s County Board for lending the girls a set of jerseys as the ladies County team continues to have no sponsor.

Just to remind all Fermanagh supporters the Ulster Ladies Intermediate Final is on this Saturday in the Athletics Ground in Armagh at 7pm.
