Ladies Football Ulster Round Up

Ulster Ladies Round Up

This years Ulster senior final will be between
reigning champions Monaghan and All Ireland junior champions Armagh.
Over the two games Monaghan had ten points to spare against Down
while Armagh had just a two point advantage over Tyrone. In yesterdays
second leg semi final Down had a dream start and were four ahead
after just seven minutes. Kyla Trainor pointed with just three minutes
gone and then the same player hit an inch perfect pass which captain
Eilish Mc Conville expertly palmed to the Monaghan net.

The Farney first score arrived courtesy of corner back Joanne Courtney
in the 13th minute. Helen Hughes added another and then in the 15th
minute Niamh Kindlon rattled the Down net with a low drive. Kindlon
and Therese Mc Nally extended the lead but Down came back with great
scores from Lyndsey Cunningham and Trainor to leave just one between
the sides. Monaghan’s Charlene Graham and Kindlon fired over and
then in injury time Hazel Kingham scored the Farney’s second goal.
Down to their credit rallied and the excellent Kyla Trainor scored
two very late goals the first a penalty to leave the half time score
level 2-6 to 3-3.

Trainor and Niamh Lynch exchanged points early on but then the game
died a death until Grainne Mc Nally’s bullet of a shot ended up
in the Down net after fifteen minutes. In the final quarter Niamh
Kindlon (3) and Catriona Mc Connell fired over while for Down Grainne
Mc Clean (2), Michaela Downey and Grainne Kelly pointed to leave
the full time score 3-11 to 3-8 in Monaghan’s favour.

Tyrone beat Armagh 2-6 to 1-7 but will not contest this year’s final.
The Red Hand County lost by two points on aggregate. First half
goals from Sarah Connolly and Gemma Begley helped them to a two
point half time lead. Sharon Duncan scored Armagh’s goal in the
second half. The score could have been so different but for the
sin binning of Tyrone duo Sarah Connolly and Connie Fox however
it’s Armagh who march on to meet Monaghan on Sunday week.

Fermanagh booked their place in the Ulster junior final despite
losing to Monaghan 5-9 to 1-18. The Erne girls had a four point
advantage from the first day and overall won by a single point.
First half goals from the Fleming sisters helped Monaghan to an
interval lead of 3-4 to 1-8 however the real hero of the day was
Fermanagh’s Caroline Little. The centre forward kicked ten points.

In the final they will play Cavan. The Breffni side took a thirty
four point advantage into their game with Antrim and won the return
game 4-16 to 1-4.
