Ladies Vhi Healthcare provincial club finals round up

Ladies Vhi Healthcare provincial club finals
round up
MONAGHAN’S Donaghmoyne created history yesterday
when they beat Tyrone side Carrickmore in the VHI Ulster ladies
senior football championship final at Fintona, 1-14 to 2-3.

The Monaghan champions became the first ever Ulster ladies football
club to win three successive senior provincial crowns.

And that piece of history never really looked in doubt yesterday
as the Monaghan girls dominated the final against a Carrickmore
side who had hoped to spoil the party.

An early goal by Amanda Casey eased Donaghmoyne into a 1-3 to no
score lead after ten minutes. Carrickmore finally ended their drought
in the 14th minute courtesy of a Gemma Begley point.

However, they never threatened to close the gap significantly and
four first half points from Caitriona McConnell saw Donaghmoyne
lead 1-8 to 0- at half-time. The Monaghan county star ended the
game with a personal tally of ten points.

Carrickmore needed a bright start on the resumption but it was
Donaghmoyne who continued to set the tempo with McConnell floating
over the first five points of the second half.

Donaghmoyne led 1-13 to 0-3 at that stage and the game, as a contest,
was well and truly over. Claire Gallagher and Gemma Begley got two
late consolation goals for Carrickmore but it was never going to
be enough to prevent Donaghmoyne from creating history.

It was also a special day for Brenda McAnespie as she guided Monaghan’s
Emyvale to the Ulster ladies junior football championship title
with a win over Armagh’s Lissummon, 5-6 to 0-2, at Fintona.

Bernie not only scored 2-2 but she also had the honour of playing
alongside her two daughters, Ciara and Aoife. Lisnaskea won the
Ulster intermediate title with a 3-11 to 1-10 win over Crossmaglen.

Meanwhile, Mayo kingpins Carnacon romped home to a comfortable
Vhi Connacht ladies senior football championship final win over
Roscommon’s St Brigid’s, 1-19 to 0-1.

Carnacon simply blew the Roscommon girls away and their extra experience
at this level was clearly evident as they handed out a crushing
defeat to St Brigid’s.

The Munster ladies senior football championship final between Waterford’s
Ballymacarbry and Donoughmore of Cork was postponed.

However, the Munster ladies intermediate football championship
final did take place with Cork’s Inch Rovers beating Cooraclare
2-19 to 0-2. Mary O’Connor and Amy O’Shea scored the goals
for Inch Rovers.
