Leinster U14 ‘B’ Shield Final

23rd May 2010

Wicklow 4-7 Offaly 2-4

Wicklow collected the Leinster under 14 ‘B’ shield title when they over came a strong Offaly side in Portarlington on Sunday last. The game was played in Blistering conditions, but neither side wilted through out the game.
Offaly were first to register scores with Lisa Gorman and Aoife Corbett notching up a point apiece to put the Faithful county two points clear with in four minutes. Wicklow response came in the fifth minute when player of the match Amy Murphy tapped over her first point of the game, which was quickly followed by a well struck point from Georgina Canavan, Canavan added her second point to draw the sides level , at the end of the first quarter, at three points each.
Wicklow’s number one Laura Hayden was in top form through out the game, pulling off a number of excellent saves at crucial times in the game, as both teams battled hard to gain the upper hand.
The Garden County went three points clear with Canavan firing over her third point, quickly followed by a brace of points from Amy Murphy, to put the Wicklow side three points clear (0-7 to 0-4).
Offaly’s response came against the run of play when Anne Daly carved her way through the Wicklow defence to fire the ball past the Wicklow keeper, to draw the sides level with two minute remaining in the half.
Wicklow’s mentors recognised the danger and introduced number twenty one, Emer McCrea, McCrea wasted no time raising the green flag with her first touch of the ball, after collecting an excellent pass from Wicklow captain Orfhlaith McNulty, to give the Wicklow side a three point lead at the break 1-7 to 0-7).
Offaly upped their game from the restart, but two outstanding saves from Wicklow net minder Laura Hayden in the first couple of minutes, took the sting out of the Offaly forwards, and kept the Wicklow side in the driving seat. Georgina Canavan settle the Wicklow side with a well struck free kick that dropped over the out stretched hands of Emer Gallagher to put Wicklow six points clear (2-7 to 1-4).
Wicklow back line of Sarah Fennelly, Sarah Jane Winder ,Hannah Dowling, Megan Doyle and Rachel Byrne quickly refocused, keeping Hayden’s goal s a no go area, but not before Becky Gorman added a second goal to the Offaly score line at the end of the third quarter (2-7 to 2-4).
However, a second goal from McCrea and an opportunist goal from Murphy put Wicklow back in control as the game moved in to the final ten minutes. Murphy was denied a third goal when her rocket like shot was deflected over by Gallagher. Although Wicklow had a tight grip on the game, the Offaly side continued to press paring a further two points off the Wicklow lead, but it was too little too late, as the Wicklow side waited patiently for the final whistle.
Wicklow Captain Orfhlaith McNulty received the shield trophy from Leinster President Sean McMullin, with Amy Murphy collecting the player of the match award.
