NATIONAL REFEREE SEMINAR

NATIONAL REFEREE SEMINAR

Twenty five referees from the four provinces attended the second national seminar of 2010 at Innisfalls GAA club Dublin on Sunday last.

The purpose of the day was to carry out further fitness tests to see if fitness levels have improved, to update the referees on the National league, to involve referees in the development of the new rules handbook and to test the whistlers on their knowledge of the rules.

The day was facilitated by Eileen Jones and Paula, Lynne, Dianne and Patricia from the Croke Park office. To start with the 25 attendees were split into 3 groups in order to participate in a bleep test. This was then followed by a 45m sprint and T Test. After this all retired to the club house were the first exercise was to look at the rules. A number of recommendations were made which will now be brought forward to the new rules committee.

After lunch a run down on the Bord Gais Energy National League was given. 50 referees were used to officitae at 110 games. 47 yellow cards were isued and 4 red ones. For the first time referees were assessed and the assessment sheet has been tweaked and will be used by a new committee of trained assessors for the championship.

The final part of the day was the rules questionaire. Presdient Pat Quill who has a great knowledge of all the playing rules contributed to a lively debate. In a change from the norm were referees would normally fill out a written questionaire, electronic voting was used. This is a much more efficent way of assessing all and was welcome by those who participated.
