Roscommon looking for third success

The Roscommon senior ladies’ team meet Carlow on Sunday next in Dr. Hyde Park at 2 p.m. This will be the team’s third game in this year’s National Football League. A win on Sunday would put Roscommon well on their way to the play-off stages. Manager PJ Shanagher is a little concerned that some niggling injuries have failed to clear up be he is still hopeful of fielding a strong side on Sunday. Having defeated a strong Cavan side last time out, Roscommon will enter the Carlow game in a confident frame of mind but they will be taking nothing for granted against the Leinster girls.

Trials are continuing for Minor, U-16 and U-14  teams next weekend. Players will be contacted regarding times and venues. The U-14 team open their account against Leitrim on March 29th. The minor team’s opening game is away to Sligo on April 26th. The U-16s get their campaign underway on May 1st, also away to Sligo. There will be no U-12 championship but Connacht is hoping to arrange a series of blitzes hosted by each county during the summer. There will be an U-14 blitz at a Galway venue on May 31st, while Roscommon will host an U-12 blitz on June 14th.

A meeting of the county board decided last week to run off a winter league with three divisions. The first games are fixed for Sunday, March 9th at 2 p.m.. Division One, Group A: St. Brigid’s, Kilglass Gaels, Kilbride, Michael Glavey’s; Division One, Group B: Padraig Pearses, Éire Óg, Clann na nGael, Roscommon Gaels. Division Two, Group A: Ballinameen, Four Roads, Western Gaels; Division Two, Group B: Oran, Boyle, Castlerea St. Kevin’s. Division Two was not completed so it will be available during the coming week. Clubs will be notified in due course.

This year’s annual congress of the Ladies’ Football Association (Cumann Peil na mBan) will be hosted by Roscommon Ladies’ Board. It will take place in the Athlone Springs Hotel on the weekend of March 7th, 8th and 9th.
