St Brendans of Galway make history again

St Brendan’s (Galway) make history again.

The weekend saw three County Finals played in Galway. The
Western Hygiene Supplies Intermediate Championship final
between St Brendan’s and St Mary’s was played in Mountbellew
on Saturday. This was a thrilling game of football between
two very evenly matched teams. St Brendan’s emerged the
winners on the day by 2 – 9 to 1 – 10 and once again, under
the management of Con Moynihan, this club has broke new
ground in Ladies Football in Galway. They now have two teams
of Senior status. This is some achievement in a county where
only four clubs hold Senior status.

This game was preceded by the under 14 A League Final between
Dunmore and St Brendan’s. Dunmore took the honours on a
score line of 1 – 6 to 0-7. This grade has been dominated
by St Brendan’s over the last nine years, and indeed they
had the winning of the game in the first half but failed
to take their scores. Dunmore defended well in the first
half and went in at half time 0-4 to 0-0 down. They made
one or two positional changes at half time and resumed the
game in an attaching mode and went on to win it by 1 – 6
to 0-7.

The third game of the weekend saw the Junior A Western Hygiene
Championship final between Dumore Mc Hales and Corofin.
This was Corofin’s second team and they were no match for
a superb Dunmore side. Dunmore had three of our County players
Geraldine Conneally, Deirdre Fallon and Marie Brehony, all
of whom gave sterling performances. Dunmore won on a score
line of 1 – 22 to 0-2.

Next week end the County have 5 teams competing in the seven-a-side
tournament. Corofin and St Brendan’s in Senior, St Brendan’s
in Intermediate and Dunmore and Bearna in Junior. Good luck
to all teams.
