Three Munster titles in a row for Cork.
Cork 3-07 Kerry 0-06.

Cork’s dominance at under age level continues at Macroom in wretched conditions on Saturday last when they scored a well merited victory over Kerry in the Munster under 16 final. This was the Rebels 3rd title a this level on the trot. This added to the under 14 sequence of success which sees Cork undefeated since 1999 in Munster and Ireland and the future looks rosy. This year Cork went straight into the Munster Semi-Final and after starting slowly the week before in their first game against Limerick, they never looked in real danger on Saturday. A swirling wind and greasy pitch, which was in excellent condition in the circumstances militated against good open play.

Cork dominated the opening period and found scores difficult to come by, points from Amanda Murphy who was very tightly policed in the corner. A goal from Noreen O’Farrell helped settle the nerves. Then Clare Daly added a peach of a goal with Laura Harrington scoring 2 points and with Geraldine 0’Fynn a point, it left Cork leading at the break by 2-5 to a single point scored by senior star Deirdre Corridan, her only score of the game. Not out of reach The game was not out of Kerry’s reach with the strong wind to their backs in the 2nd half.

Kerry teams do not give up without a fight and this game was no exception. They attacked Cork from the start of the 2nd half, but found scores difficult to get, such was the teak tough defending of the Cork rearguard. The entire 6 were magnificent, marshalled by Rena Buckley in the pivotal position in defence. After Kerry had got 2 points back the decisive scores of the half as far as Cork were concerned came. First Miriam Sheehan pointed, then when the ball was worked out of defence and reached Clare Daly the Dunmanus Rovers girl cut through and with a glorious ground shot calmly slotted the ball to the net, for her 2nd goal. This really took the wind out of Kerry and they never looked like coming back after that. Laura Power and Geraldine O’Flynn, moved back to help out their defence on numerous occasions and Cork held firm, denying Kerry the goal they so badly needed. The Kingdom girls did manage 3 more points, but a free in the final minute by Geraldine O’Flynn closed out the scoring for Cork and closed out Kerry as well.

The team will have a long break until August and no doubt they will improve even more and hopefully go on and emulate the team of 2002 and capture the All-Ireland crown again. Rena Buckley was named played of the game.
