U14 - Wicklow 4 -2 Dublin 9-15

U 14 – Wicklow 4 -2 Dublin 9-15

Wicklow faced the neighbours Dublin in the last match of the pool stages of the “A” Division, this was their only away match of the season played in Westmanstown, Lucan.

Wicklow were hoping to continue on from their fabulous second half display against Wexford, the players were determined and the fabulous weather added to the encouragement. Wicklow still missed a few players through injury and it was agreed with the opposition to play the game with unlimited subs and give all the players a run. The starting team was the following; Vivienne Walsh, Niamh Kenny, Marie Clarke (Captain), Tara Brady, Emma Marshall, Suzanne O’Neill, Joy O’Brien, Jessica Hurley, Calvin Swart, Rose Fagan, Claire O’Rourke, Josephine Doyle, Amy Murphy, Aine O’Reilly, Rebecca Bowes. Certain players had to play out of their positions and special mention has to go to Vivienne Walsh who played in goals, she hasn’t played in this position for 2 years but took the task on bravely and did an excelent job.

The game started at a very fast pase and Dublin had their first point after 2 minutes and then a goal in the 6th. The Wicklow half back line of Emma Marshall, Suzanne O’Neill and Joy O’Brien got on top of their game and started to win the balls that mattered. Wicklow proved that they could beat the defence and Amy Murphy scored to brilliant goals in the 9th and 17th minute. It was a titanic battle in the midfield where Jessica and Calvin had to raise their game to the highest level to match their opposition. The pitch was in very good condition which allowed the half forward line of Rose Fagan, Claire O’Rourke and Josephine Doyle the run well with the ball and to get it into their forward line. Full Forward Aine O’Reily accepted all that came her way and scored a well worked point in the 22nd minute, with Rebecca Bowes in corner forward unlucky not to get her name on the score card. The back line of Niamh Kenny, Marie Clarke and Tara Brady showed that they were a good match for the Dublin forwards, however Dublin scored a further 4 goals and 5 points before Aine replied again with a point in the 30th minute. Half time score Dublin 5-6 Wicklow 3-1.

The subs that joined the play were Aine McDonald, Siofra Heffernan, Megan Swart, Amy Birmingham, Tara Brady, Clionah Byrne, Georgina Canavan and Anna Kelly. The second 30 minutes was tough for the Wicklow girls and they only managed to score a goal and a point. Dublin played some very good football and the won with an overall score of 9-15 to 4-2.

This concludes the championship season for the u14 girls. It was young and inexperienced team that played with a lot of heart and courage, only 3 of the girls that are currently playing were part of the regular starting line up last year. The majority of the panel will be under age again next year and we trust that they have gained valuable experience from playing football at this highest possible level. The management wishes to thank all the players for their commitment and the parents for their unconditional support to our girls. Best of luck to the u16 team that will go forward to represent Wicklow in the semi finals and also the Wicklow senior team with their quest to win “C” division.
