Video: Down Survive Incredible Sligo Fightback

 

Probably the most exciting finish to an inter-county game at the weekend was at St Tiernach’s Park in Clones where Sligo nearly snatched victory from Down in their TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Quarter-final.

Down led by ten points well into the second-half but Sligo reduced the gap to just one point and had late chances to win. In the end, the Mourne girls held out on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-10.

‘The girls are absolutely devastated’ said Sligo manager Pat Costello. ‘They gave it everything but it wasn’t to be’.

Down manager Mark Copeland knew luck had been on his side. ‘If I’m honest, they were unfortunate not to draw or nick a win. We’re relieved but it’s about getting over the line and we’re pleased to be in the semi-finals’.

Costello now sees Down and Waterford as being Championship favourites, with Fermanagh a ‘dark horse’.
