Report: Kildare end Dublin's long reign as Leinster U16 A champions

Kildare and Dublin U16A Ladies clashed in the Leinster U16A Leinster Final hosted by Ballymore Eustace GAA, Kildare.

It was a mixed afternoon weather-wise, with conditions slightly damp and slippery underfoot.

A great turnout, all in anticipation for a great match, and Dublin looking for the ninth in a row at U16 level.

Both teams started strong from the throw in.

Dublin were first on the scoreboard with a point, but it was even scoring for the next few minutes, Kildare 1-01 to Dublin 1-01 in the first seven minutes, with Kildare’s scores coming from the boot of Jodie Flanagan.

Kildare then started to pull forward with a series of scores from Aoife Rattigan and Orlaith Sullivan.

The quality of these scores was fantastic. Dublin pushed forward in the final few minutes of the first half in a bid to increase their score tally, however the Kildare defence proved very strong, producing two great saves to maintain the 6 point lead at half time.

After an enthralling first half, it would transpire that the first ten minutes of the second half would shape the remainder of the game.

Dublin were first on the scoreboard again with a point in the 5th minute.

However Kildare were on form today, racking up 1-02 in the space of 60 seconds, Orlaith and Aoife again combining well to produce these scores.

The following 10 minutes was all Kildare. Kildare now held a strong lead.  Dublin were not done yet, showing great character and determination, Dublin put in a great effort to pull back 1-04 well into injury time.

Final Score  Kildare 2-17 (23)  Dublin 2-10 (16)

Credit to the Kildare back line who contained a mammoth attack from the Dublin forwards in the closing stages of the game. Great credit to both sides.  A fantastic game to watch!  Congratulations to Kildare on their win.
