Roscommon get Division 3 League campaign off to a flying start

Lidl Ladies Division 3 National Football League Round 1

Roscommon 5-14
Offaly 0-08

Ward Bros sponsored Roscommon senior ladies team got their national football league off to perfect start when they had 21 points to spare over Offaly in damp and blustery Kiltoom on Sunday last.

A good start to the first half despite playing into a gale force wind and a strong second half performance was the catalyst for this victory.

Scoring five goals and fourteen points while just conceding eight points this early in the season has to be very pleasing for manager Michael Finneran and his management team.

Playing into the teeth of a strong gale in the first half Roscommon got the perfect start with just three minutes on the clock, Laura Fleming firing an excellent goal to the top left corner after some good build up play.

Two Mairead Daly points for the visitors and a point from Laura Fleming and Rebecca Finan left 1-02 to 0-02 before Roscommon’s second goal came from the boot of Jenny Downey on the quarter hour mark.

Offaly to their credit didn’t give up and ate back into the Roscommon lead scoring  three points without reply to leave it 2-02 to 0-06, after twenty five minutes points coming from Mairead Daly, Lisa Gorman (free) and Ellee McEvoy.

It was Roscommon who finished the half the stronger with three points from Rebecca Finan (3 one free) and Jenny Higgins (1) to go into the break 2-06 to 0-06 and a strong wind to come for the second half.

Laura Fleming extended the Roscommon lead within a minute of the restart with a point from play. 1-01 from Rebecca Finan in the next two minutes had this game put the beyond the reach of the Faithful, but they did breach the Roscommon rearguard in the thirty sixth minute but a superb save from Helena Cummins in the Roscommon goal denied Mairead Daly a excellent goal chance.

The sucker punch came for Offaly in the fortieth minute when Roscommon’s top scorer on the day Rebecca Finan got in for her second and the home side’s fourth goal to leave it 4-08 to 0-08.

Roscommon went on to score a further 1-06 in the final twenty minutes with Jenny Higgins (1-0), Sheila Brady (2), Niamh Feeney (1), Rebecca Finan (2) Niamh Fleming (1) to leave the final score Roscommon 5-14 Offaly 0-08. Referee Yvonne Duffy Cavan
