Leinster LGFA Launch TG4 Championship for 2024

Leinster LGFA were delighted to launch the 2024 TG4 Leinster Championships in the historic Castle Durrow this week.

With the LGFA celebrating its 50^th Anniversary this year, Castle Durrow was the perfect place to commemorate fifty years of Ladies Gaelic Football. Back in 1974, the very first All Ireland Final was held in Durrow involving teams from Offaly and Tipperary.

Leinster LGFA were delighted to honour that Offaly team as four of its members joined us for our Championship Launch. Agnes Gorman, Phyllis Hackett Price, Catherine Daly and Lucy Bryant White joined us and regaled those gathered with the stories from that historic era. We were also delighted to be joined by captains and representatives from all twelve Leinster counties ahead of the start of the Championship this weekend.

This year, the Leinster Championship boasts three grades with four teams in each and this Sunday sees its opening round. In the Senior Championship, reigning Leinster and All Ireland Senior Champions Dublin meet reigning All Ireland Intermediate Champions Kildare at Parnell Park. This is Kildare’s first foray into Senior Championship since 2017. Meanwhile in Páirc Tailteann, home side Meath will take on Laois.

In the Intermediate Championship, last year’s finalists Wexford welcome Wicklow to Starlights Rapparees GAA while Westmeath host Offaly at St. Lomans.

In the Junior Championship, Carlow face Louth at SETU Campus while Kilkenny welcome Longford to MW Hire Training Centre at Dunmore.

Leinster LGFA are happy to confirm that one game from each round of this year’s Leinster Senior Championship will also be streamed live on Facebook and Youtube starting with this weekend’s clash between Dublin and Kildare. Meath and Kildare will be streamed in Round Two on April 28th, while in Round Three both games will get the live treatment with Kildare playing Laois on May 4^th and Dublin taking on Meath on May 5^th! The Championship Finals will also be streamed – the TG4 Leinster Senior Final from Croke Park by TG4 on May 12^th and the Intermediate and Junior Finals on May 19th.

Speaking at the Launch, Leinster President Trina Murray spoke of how much Ladies Gaelic Football has grown since 1974 and how she is tremendously excited to be involved at this juncture. She said: “We are looking forward to the start of another Leinster Championship. It is terrific to be here at Castle Durrow to acknowledge where Ladies Gaelic Football started and to reflect on how much it has grown since.

We are especially grateful to be joined by the ladies from the 1974 team from Offaly and it has been wonderful listening to the genesis of the LGFA and how it all began all those years ago.

We are also delighted that our TG4 Leinster Senior Final has once again been facilitated alongside Leinster GAA on May 12^th. We owe our gratitude to Michael Reynolds and Derek Kent for making this happen and we look forward to another special day in Croke Park.”
