2014 TESCO Homegrown Ladies National Football Leagues Launched

2014 Tesco HomeGrown Ladies National Football League Launch

The 2014 TESCO Homegrown Ladies National Football Leagues were launched today at TESCO Extra in Clarehall, Dublin. Players and managers from each of the four divisions assembled for the launch of the league ahead of the first round of the competition which gets underway on February 2nd.

30 counties will get their 2014 seasons underway throughout the country as all four divisions throw in on February 2nd. The top 3 divisions will have 7 rounds of action between now and April 6th with the top 4 counties progressing to the TESCO Homegrown National Football League Semi Finals on April 27th. The Division 1,2 and 3 TESCO Homegrown National Football League Finals will be televised live on TG4 from Parnell Park on May 10th with the Division 4 final taking place a week earlier on May 3rd.

2013 Champions, Cork will get their title defence underway when they welcome Mayo to Cork in what will be a replay of last year’s Division 1 final. Gregory McGonigle will open his account as the new Dublin manager when he takes charge of his new team as they face a Monaghan side that he led to Division 1 glory in 2012. Donegal make the journey to last year’s Division 1 semi-finalists, Laois and Kerry get their ‘Spring Series’ underway as they welcome Tyrone to Fitzgerald Stadium.

In Division 2 Galway will hope to go one step further than last year when they were defeated in the TESCO Homegrown Division 2 final; however, they face a tough opener away to Kildare who will be under the charge of former Galway great, John Divilly. Cavan will hope to continue their momentum from capturing the Intermediate All Ireland title when they welcome Westmeath to Breffni Park. Down produced a storming final few minutes in last year’s Division 3 final and their reward is an opening round visit from Meath, elsewhere, Fermanagh will host Clare in the final match of round 1.

Armagh will hope to make up for defeat in last year’s Division 3 final when they meet Longford in Round 1. All Ireland Junior Champions and last year’s Division 4 winners, Offaly will travel to Waterford for their first round. Tipperary, under the guidance of hurling legend John Leahy, will travel to Wexford whilst Sligo host Connacht neighbours, Leitrim, in their Division 3 opener.

Last year’s beaten Division 4 finalists, Roscommon, will be hoping to go one step further this year and they will host Wicklow in the first round. Antrim and Derry will contest an all Ulster Division 1 opener with Limerick and Louth meeting in the third game on the opening weekend.

Speaking at the launch of the 2014 TESCO Homegrown National Football League LGFA president Pat Quill said ‘We are delighted to join with TESCO to launch the 2014 TESCO Homegrown Ladies National Football Leagues. The Leagues are a vital competition and are always keenly contested across all 4 divisions. Last year we welcomed TESCO as title sponsors of the league and what a fantastic year it was, this year I am sure will match and surpass all expectations.’

TESCO Ireland Marketing Director, Henry Dummer said ‘We are delighted to continue our support of the Tesco Homegrown National Football Leagues, one of the premier national competitions in the Ladies Football calendar.  Every county in the country will take part and contest in an intensive league campaign hoping to secure silverware and/or promotion, while identifying and building new talent along the way. Sponsoring the Tesco Homegrown National Football Leagues demonstrates our commitment to assisting the LGFA in developing the game across the country, and our goal of promoting female participation in sport, along with healthy lifestyle choices. I would like to wish all counties, players and team managers every success in the League this season and look forward to watching the action unfold over the coming months.”
