2019 John West Féile Peil na nÓg winners

All four provinces, and the USA, ensured a spread of winners from across 12 different counties in the quest for Ladies Football silverware at the 2019 John West All-Ireland Féile Peil na nÓg, held across Connacht last weekend.

Claregalway took Division 1 Cup honours for the third time, with a first success since 2011, while teams from Cork, Clare, Tyrone, Mayo, Longford, Roscommon, Antrim, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Sligo, Dublin, Derry and the USA were also in joyous form after they also claimed Féile successes.

In an entertaining Division 1 decider, Claregalway pushed Clontarf all the way, before recording a 1-2 to 0-0 victory over the Dublin side in front of a large crowd at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence.

This was a really keenly contested encounter, with Claregalway consistently met with a resolute Clontarf defence, who were teak-tough and offered little opportunities for scoring chances.

Niamh Donovan cut in for a point after 75 seconds, but this was the lone score of the opening half, as both sides defended well.

On the restart, Claregalway had some missed opportunities, but they continued to push hard.

Seven minutes into the half Alannah Fahy added their second point, and when Joy Eurgo added a goal two and a half minutes later the lead was extended to five points.

Clontarf battled hard in search of scores in the closing six minutes, but Claregalway held out to ensure a fabulous win.

After the game Claregalway captain Shauna O’Connell received the Cup from LGFA President Marie Hickey.

12 months after claiming Cup honours, Éire Óg captured the Division 1 Shield title with a 5-6 to 0-1 win over Sarsfields, Kildare in the decider, also in Beken.

The Cork club, who incidentally were hosted by Claregalway, delivered a strong final performance with Orlaith Cremin, Méabh McGoldrick, Maria O’Donovan and captain Edel Sheehan on target for the eventual winners.

Sarsfields battled bravely, with Siofra Galvin accounting for their point, but they found it tough against an eager Éire Óg outfit.

New York captain Ciara McDermott lifted the Division 2 Cup, after a 2-3 to 1-3 final win over Carryduff.

This game was a keenly contested encounter at the Connacht GAA Centre, with New York leading by 0-1 to 0-0 at half-time, with McDermott on target.

In an exciting encounter, the result could have gone either way, but it was New York’s second half brace of goals which proved key, after Kailey O’Connor (1-0) and Sarah Donohue (1-1) found the net, with Claire Berkowitz also adding a second half point.

The Banner were crowned Division 2 Shield winners, following a 3-9 to 2-2 win over Killeavy St Moninna of Armagh in the final.

Aided by a strong wind assistance, The Banner started strongly, and led by 3-5 to 0-0 at half-time, with Caoimhe Cahill, Grainne Burke and Áine Long impressive.

Killeavy responded well on the restart, with the help of a Cassie Woods penalty goal, but the Clare outfit held that extra edge to record a 10-point victory.

Carrickmore St. Colmcilles edged an entertaining Division 3 Cup final by 1-5 to 0-7 against Cooley Kickhams of Louth at the Connacht GAA Centre.

In a keenly contested affair, Carrickmore bounced back from last year’s final loss, with a strong first half performance helping them to victory.

The Tyrone outfit led by 1-5 to 0-4 at half-time, with Sorcha Gormley taking all of their scores.

Playing against the wind on the restart, Carrickmore were forced to put in a heroic defensive display, with Gormley and Áine Grimes to the fore.

Afterwards Ríonach McCallan accepted the Cup, with five of the side picking up their second All-Ireland medal in a week, after helping Tyrone to All-Ireland Under 14 success the previous weekend.

Carnacon took Division 3 Shield honours, with a 4-4 to 1-2 win over Loughrea.

Despite a strong start, where Loughrea led by 1-1 to 0-0 early on, with Roisin Broderick netting their goal; the Galway side found it tough on the restart.

With the aid of a Jemma Dolan goal they moved 1-2 to 1-1 ahead, but Loughrea responded to level the tie at the interval.

Wind assisted Carnacon were solid on the restart, and added 3-1 unanswered including another Dolan goal.

Sarah King pushed Carnacon 4-4 to 1-2 ahead with a fine point, with five minutes remaining, and although Carnacon pushed for further scores, they failed to add to their tally, as they claimed an 11-point win.

It was a case of double celebration for Clonguish Óg, as the Longford side claimed both Girls and Boys All-Ireland Féile success at the weekend.

The girls team captured the Division 4 Cup title, with a 2-3 to 0-4 win over Limerick side Knockainey in the decider.

This game was finely balanced throughout, with an Ella Duggan goal helping Clonguish to a 1-1 to 0-2 interval lead.

Very little separated the sides on the restart, with Emma Shannon (1-2) and Rachel McGrath (0-1) on target, on the way to a five-point win.

St. Brigid’s were crowned Division 4 Shield champions, after a strong start helped them to a 1-5 to 0-2 win over Ballinasloe in the final.

The Roscommon club started well and led by 1-2 to 0-0 after three minutes, with early points from Faye Loftus and Ciara Fallon, added to by a Loftus goal.

St. Brigid’s led by 1-3 to 0-1 at the break, with further points from Loftus and Roisin O’Donovan in injury-time for the eventual winners in a tight second half.

Division 5 Cup honours went to Gort na Mona, after a 1-1 to 0-2 win over Clan na nGael, Roscommon in Clonberne.

The Belfast outfit edged a tight encounter, and led by 1-1 to 0-1 at half-time, with Mia Mills scoring their goal, and Christine Lynch on target with a point.

Joint captains Gabrielle Monaghan and Orlaigh Lennon lifted the Cup after the game.

The Shield champions came from the same round robin group, with Dunnamaggin taking honours.

The Kilkenny side were 3-3 to 1-1 winners over Clonmel Commercials in the decider, also in Clonberne.

Louisa Gilmore delivered a goal for Dunnamaggin to tie the game at 1-1 apiece at the break.

Dunamaggin took control on the restart thanks to the aid of a strong wind assistance, with goals from Katie Grace and Gilmore with Clara Whelan Foxe captaining the winners.

Blessington took Division 6 Cup honours, thanks to a 2-9 to 1-3 final win over Michael Glavey’s Roscommon.

Two first half goals were key to this victory, as Blessington led by 2-3 to 1-2 at the break.

Aibhe King (1-2) and Caoimhe Gilligan (1-0) found the net for the eventual winners.

A solid defensive display on the restart was also crucial, as the Wicklow side held their opponents to just a single point.

Sadhbh Fisher (0-4), Juliette Gough, Leila Shannon and Emily-Rose O’Toole (0-1 each) contributed Blessington’s other scores.

Captain Orlaith Ni Ghallchobhair accepted the Cup after the game.

Galbally Pearses took the Division 6 Shield title, with a 3-5 to 0-4 win over Kiltimagh in the final in Mountbellew.

In a tough physical game, goals were key to victory, with Rachel Kelly (2-1) and Caitlin Quinn (1-0) scoring the winners goals, and Ella Hetherinton (0-2), Leanna Corrigan and Maria McKenna (0-1 each) also on target.

Rachel Byrne (0-3) and Cara Hession (0-1) accounted for Kiltimagh’s scores.

Bray Emmets were crowned Division 7 Cup champions, with a 1-3 to 1-2 win over Rathcoffey.

Emmets bagged 1-2 in the opening half to hold a two-point interval lead, but they managed to hold out for the slenderest of wins.

Aghaloo O’Neills took Division 7 Shield honours with them to Tyrone, after a 2-6 to 0-6 over Lamh Dhearg of Antrim in the final.

Aghaloo led by 1-5 to 0-3 at half-time, with Áine Sherry netting their goal.

Top-scorer Sherry (2-4) again found the net on the restart, with Paris Douglas and Ellie McGee (0-1 each) also contributing scores for the eventual winners.

Roisin Colton lifted the cup after the game, capping off a magnificent week, as she was also part of the Tyrone All-Ireland Under 14 winning side.

Nothing could separate Roscommon Gaels and Derry side Ballinascreen in the Division 8 Cup decider, so the title was shared, after the final score finished Roscommon Gaels 2-6 Ballinascreen 1-9 .

The sides were tied at 1-3 apiece after the end of normal time, with Zara Fallon (1-0) and Shauna Walsh (0-3) accounting for Roscommon Gaels scores.

Cara McIvor netted for Ballinascreen, with Michaela O’Neill scoring two points.

Heading into extra-time, the Roscommon Gaels goalkeeper got injured with Molly Rose Finnernan stepping into the breach having never been in goals before, and she produced one of the saves of the tournament.

Three further points from Shauna Walsh and a goal from Jenny Morris cut the gap to a point for Roscommon Gaels, after Leanne McCullagh and Shona Fullerton had been on target for Ballinascreen.

Shauna Walsh had the last kick of the ball for Roscommon Gaels putting a free over the crossbar to level the tie once more, and signal full-time.

The fairest decision was to share the title, with a toss of a coin deciding on who was going to keep the cup for the first six months with Roscommon Gaels winning the toss.

Sligo sides dominated in Divisions 8 to 10, with Shield silverware in Division 8 going Eoghan Rua’s way, after a 5-4 to 3-0 win over St Ciaran’s Roscommon in the final.

In Division 9, CIT Gaels took Cup honours with a 4-6 to 4-1 win over Cavan side Cornafean in the final, while the Shield went to St. Ultans of Meath who had a 1-2 to 0-2 win over St. Jude’s of Dublin,

In Division 10, Shared cup success went to St John’s Sligo, who had a 3-3 to 2-6 for Delco Gaels of Philadelphia in the final.

Shield honours also stayed in Sligo, as Drumcliffe/Rosses Point beat fellow Sligo club Owenmore Gaels by 5-7 to 3-3 in the final.
