Kildare bounced back from their Rd 3 defeat at the hands of Wexford to record a comfortable win over Longford in Hawkfield on Sunday afternoon.

Roisin Byrne, Kildare’s top scorer in their League campaign to date, gave an outstanding display and finished the game as leading scorer with a tally of 2.04.

Longford started bright and opened the scoring with a point from Aoife Darcy but this was quickly cancelled out with a fine point from Grace Clifford.

In an amazing three-minute spell, Kildare netted three quick-fire goals from Byrne, Clifford and Ellen Dowling.

Byrne netted her second goal, and Kildare’s fourth, with a shot that deceived the Longford keeper by just dipping under the crossbar at the last second.

Both sides traded points. Aoife Wosser, on her first start between the sticks for Kildare, was called upon to fist a high dropping goalward bound shot over the bar. It was the home side taking a commanding lead at the break, 4.07 to 0.03.

Free takers were called into action in the early exchanges of the second half, with Kildare’s Byrne and Dowling on the button.

Not to be outdone, Longford’s Emer Heaney and Aoife Darcy matched them. Yellow cards shown to Eadaoin Connolly & Molly Price didn’t deter the home side from inflicting more damage on the visitors. More points followed and a late goal from Siobhan O Sullivan and a Jean Miley point left Kildare with the win on a full-time score of Kildare 5.16 Longford 0.05

Kildare can be pleased with their display and Team manager Daniel Moynahan said: “It was a good team performance from the starting 15 to those girls that came on from the subs bench.”

The team has loads of potential and  are starting to show signs of the style of football he and his management team want them to play.

Longford having won promotion last year from Division 4 and have found the step up tough.

They  put in a  battling and spirited performance, however, and can take plenty of positives into their remaining games.

Kildare are on the road for the remainder of their campaign and will be up against a free-scoring Meath side next weekend.
