Clubs Prepare for Historic Weekend

TESCO Homegrown All Ireland Club Finals Launch

Six clubs representing 6 different counties will go into this weekend hoping to be crowned TESCO Homegrown All Ireland Club champions as the TESCO Homegrown Junior, Intermediate and Senior All Ireland Club championships take place on Saturday and Sunday.

The TESCO Homegrown All Ireland Junior Championship final takes place on Saturday in Ballinasloe when Murroe Boher from Limerick meet St. Ciaran’s from Roscommon as both clubs aim to claim a first ever All Ireland title. Murroe-Boher will be hoping to make history and become only the second Limerick club ever to win an All Ireland Club title and follow in the footsteps of Gerald Griffins who won in 2000. Murroe have been in fine form this year and never more so than in their semi final when they defeated Dee Rangers without conceding a single score. St. Ciaran’s have been in dominant form on their path to the final as they never failed to score less than 3 goals in any match although they had to battle hard to overcome St. Dympna’s in their semi final emerging victorious on a scoreline of 3-15 to 3-13.

Castleisland Desmond’s from Kerry and Clonbur of Galway will meet in the TESCO Homegrown Intermediate Club Final in Corrofin Co. Clare at 1:30pm on Saturday. Clonbur will be hoping to bring the Intermediate title back to Galway following Claregalway’s win in the same final last year. Much will depend on the form of Lorna Joyce who is one of the most experienced players in the panel having won an All Ireland with Galway in 2004. Aoibhinn Joyce is a player that is full of potential having been a key player for the All Ireland winning Galway Minor team this year. Castleisland too have plenty of intercounty experience amongst their ranks including All Star defender Cáit Lynch. The likes of Aoife Lyons and Aisling Leonard will be key players as will their captain Lorraine Scanlon who is expected to have a big impact on proceedings.

The TESCO Homegrown Senior All Ireland Club Final will take place on Sunday at Tuam Stadium with the highly anticipated meeting of Cork’s Mourneabbey and Termon from Donegal. Termon have been in wonderful form this year as they defeated Donaghmoyne who were many people’s favourites for the overall title. Much has been made of the form of the excellent Geraldine McLoughlin who has been unplayable this year scoring 4-04 of 4-08 in the Ulster Championship final. However, this is far from a one player team as they boast players of the likes of Laura Gallagher, Nicole McLaughlin, Emer Gallagher, Shannon McGroddy, Róisín McCafferty, Therese McCafferty and Róisín Friel, all of whom played championship football for Donegal last year.

Mourneabbey have tasted success in the All Ireland Club finals in recent years having claimed the Junior Championship in 2005 and followed that with the Intermediate championship in 2007. Like Termon, this is their first time to feature in the senior decider and there is no doubt that they will be looking to the O’Sullivan sisters for inspiration. Ciara O’Sullivan is the most familiar player on their side having claimed her second All Star Award after playing a starring role for Cork this season, Doireann O’Sullivan has returned to fitness following a long injury delay which saw her return to the Cork panel for the final where she was joined by her sister and team captain, Róisín. Máire O’Callaghan was also a Cork panellist this year and she has been in superb form at midfield for Mourneabbey on their run to the final.
