Cork dominate 2008 All-Star Awards

ALL-IRELAND winners Cork again dominated the 2008 Gaelic Football All Star Awards with seven gongs at a gala banquet in the City West Hotel on Saturday night.

Cork captain Angela Walsh led the way, collecting her fourth award to match her four All-Ireland medals, while Ulster champions Monaghan were rewarded for their outstanding displays this year with four All Stars.

Elsewhere, intermediate champions Tipperary picked up one gong through Edel Hanley, while Down’s Michaela Downey landed her first award.

The selection was rounded off with an award each for senior outfits Mayo and Tyrone.

Pol O Gallchor of TG4 said: “I would like to pay tribute in particular to Uachtarán, Geraldine Giles and Chief Executive, Helen O’Rourke and all the staff for their vision, dedication, good humour and friendship. Our partnership has matured well as we continue to work in tandem to achieve common goals.”

The Young Players of the Year Awards were also presented on the night with Dora Gorman of Salthill/Knocknacarra, Galway picking up the Connacht award, while Alice Malone (Kileen, Laois) got the nod in Leinster. Aine O’Leary (Cil Min, Cork )was the Munster winner, with Jane Ward (Beragh Red Knights, Tyrone) picking up the Ulster gong.

President Mary McAleese was the guest of honour at the event which was hosted by Marty Morrissey and Dathi O Se.
