GREGORY McGonigle got his reign as Dublin ladies senior football team manager off to the perfect start with a comfortable victory over Kerry in Division 1 of the Tesco Homegrown Ladies National Football League on Sunday. The Sky Blues saw their opening round fixture against Monaghan postponed due to weather conditions but a first competitive fixture of the 2014 season resulted in a 3-9 to 0-7 win over the Kingdom in Coolock. Noelle Healy bagged two early goals and former minor star Carla Rowe also raised a green flag as the Jackies cruised into a 3-3 to 0-0 lead against the Munster champions. At half-time, Dublin were 3-7 to 0-2 clear, with Kerry managing points from Sarah Houlihan (free) and experienced forward Patrice Dennehy. Kerry were much improved in the second half but despite the best efforts of Dennehy, Louise Galvin and Sarah Jane Joy, the damage had been done before half-time. Houlihan, Joy and Dennehy were on target for the visitors in the second half, with Rowe and Sinead Aherne tagging on points for the victorious Dubs. Next up for Dublin are Mayo and Cora Staunton, who scored 1-13 against Tyrone on Sunday to take her League tally to 2-21 from two matches. Staunton bagged 1-8 in the opening day defeat to Cork and she was on fire once more against Tyrone, who suffered a massive 0-4 to 5-17 defeat on home soil at the Garvaghey GAA centre. Mayo led by 4-7 to 0-4 at half-time and while Staunton grabbed the headlines once again for her scoring exploits, Sarah Roe helped herself to two goals. Doireann Hughes and Deirdre Doherty were Mayo’s other goalscorers as the Westerners collected their first points of the campaign. Holders Cork, meanwhile, were pushed all the way by a spirited Donegal outfit at Robert Emmet’s. The Leesiders made the long trip north and came away with a 3-13 to 2-10 victory, with Emma Farmer hitting two goals for the League and TG4 All-Ireland champions. Orla Finn was also on target in a game that saw ace forward Valerie Mulcahy taken off with a facial injury. At half-time, Donegal were level at 1-7 to 2-4, with Aisling Cunningham notching the home side’s first half goal. The fourth game in Division 1 saw last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists Monaghan get their League campaign off to a winning start with a 2-19 to 1-9 victory over Laois at Inniskeen. In Division 2, there were victories for Galway, Meath and Westmeath, as Armagh, Waterford and Longford scored wins in Division 3. And in Division 4, Antrim won away to Wicklow as Roscommon scored a massive win against Limerick.
