Mary Nevin wins Irish Independent/Lucozade
Sport Award for September

AFTER dazzling displays in the All-Ireland
quarter-final and semi-final, September’s
Irish Independent /Lucozade Sport Player of
the Month is Dublin’s Mary Nevin.

For the 25-year-old Na Fianna star, this year
has been personally satisfying in many respects
but the devastation of a successive All-Ireland
final defeat rankles. “It was desperate to
lose against Galway, especially as we were
there last year. People did not rate us all
year but things could have been so different
if we had taken our goal chances,” she said.

The
25-year-old nurse scored a brilliant 1-6 against
Donegal in the quarter-finals, and another 0-6
in the semi-final victory over Kerry, although
she is unsure of how many of this year’s team
will return to try to make it third time lucky.
“People need to sit back and relax for a month
or two and regroup,” said Nally.

“I cannot speak for any of the players but I hope
John O’Leary stays on and I see no reason why
the likes of Angie (McNally) should retire.” Elsewhere,
reigning All-Ireland club champions Donoughmore
(Cork) beat Ballymacarbery (Waterford) 3-17 to
1-4 to set up a final with Kerry champions St
Pat’s.
