GALWAY’S Football Board has been left highly embarrassed
by the decision of the Connacht Council to reschedule
its club championship fixture. A meeting of the
Connacht Council’s GAC on Wednesday night opted
to put back its entire club championship schedule
by two weeks. It followed Tuesday night’s decision
by the Galway Football Board not to defer the
date of its county final between Killererin and
Salthill/Knocknacarra from Sunday because of a
clash with Galway’s All-Ireland ladies football
final with Dublin in Croke Park.

The Galway ladies board and its umbrella authority
in Dublin had appealed for a change of date to
accommodate supporters wishing to see both games.
But the Galway Board stuck to its original schedule
to allow time for its champions to play in a Connacht
club championship preliminary round fixture against
the Sligo champions on October 17. But in a statement
yesterday the Connacht Council said it had put
back its club fixtures by two weeks to avoid a
clash with the Railway Cup games and the International
Rules series on October 17 and 24.

The meeting of the Sligo and Galway champions
will now take place on November 7, five weeks
after Sunday’s Galway final. It leaves the Galway
Board in an embarrassing position as their football
final presses ahead in opposition to the first
ladies senior final involving a Galway team since
1975.
