Intermediate Football Championship
Kilkenny 1-7 Waterford 0-17

Waterford had a comfortable win over Kilkenny in a deferred first round Intermediate Championship match played in windy conditions in Mullinavat on Sunday last. Playing with the wind Waterford pressed forward from the throw-in, however it wasn’t until the 5th minute when Kilkenny goalkeeper, Aine Sheehy, pushed a Mairead Wall shot over the cross-bar that Waterford got on the scoreboard. Waterford continued to dominate play and scores from Michelle McGrath and Michelle Ryan (3,2f) saw Waterford take a 5 point lead.
With the Waterford backs playing well it wasn’t until the 18th minute that Kilkenny got their first score from a free by Marie Dargan . Kilkenny narrowed the gap further with a Jenny Reddy point after 23 minutes. Waterford continued to drive forward with the midfield pairing of Michelle McGrath and Elaine Power in superb form in the middle of the field. Points from Michelle Ryan (free) and Eileen Power saw Waterford take a 0-7 to 0-2 lead into half time.
Kilkenny attacked straight from the throw-in and the Waterford keeper, Aimee Jordan, got down well to stop a low shot. With Kilkenny forwards piling in on top of her, the referee after consulting his umpires gave a penalty. Jordan again pulled off a top class save from the ensuing penalty and with the Waterford backs unable to clear their lines the ball found its way into the back of the net. A further point from Kilkenny sharpshooter Dargan got Kilkenny to within a point of Waterford.
Waterford stepped up the pace of the game and for the remainder of the half outscored Kilkenny with scores from Niamh Briggs (2), Elaine Power (2), Michelle Ryan (2, 1free), Mairead Wall and Sinead Ryan to 3 Kilkenny points. There were outstanding performances from Grainne Kenneally, Laurissa Hogan in the backs and from Michelle McGrath in midfield.
Waterford make the long journey to Roscommon next weekend in their final group match.
