Ladies Gaelic Celebrates Birthday

The Ladies Gaelic Football Association celebrated the anniversary of our foundation by returning the site of that first meeting, Hayes Hotel in Thurles.

Members of the original committee that was established on July 18th 1974 including Frank Kearney, Marie McAleer and Brendan Martin were present along with several others that attended that first meeting.

An entertaining night was had by all as memories were shared and friendships renewed at the venue from which many of them originated.

This year marks the 40th Ladies All Ireland Senior Football Championship with the 40th final taking place at Croke Park on September 29th. The original championship featured just 8 counties including Roscommon, Laois, Galway, Kerry, Cork and Waterford along with Offaly and Tipperary who contested the first final. Tipperary were the first champions winning on a scoreline of 2-03 to 2-02 against Offaly and in a unique twist, the losing captain, Agnes O’Gorman presented the winning captain, Kitty Ryan, with the Brendan Martin Cup.

As part of the celebrations of the 40th All Ireland Championship every player that has ever contested a Senior, Junior or Intermediate final to return to Croke Park to take part in the celebrations.
