The Ladies Gaelic Football Association and the Irish Cancer Society today announced that they have set a new World Record at the 2013 TG4 Ladies All Ireland Football Finals and raised €20,000 for Action Breast Cancer in the process. The World Record was set for ‘Most People Wearing Bandanas In One Place’ and has been confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The unique pink bandanas, which bore the Irish Cancer Society, LGFA and TG4 logos were sold at Croke Park during last year’s TG4 All Ireland Finals with a phenomenal response coming from Ladies Gaelic Football fans. The demand for bandanas was overwhelming and they sold out on the day. After all the counting was complete, and those that did not satisfy the record criteria were excluded, a phenomenal figure of 5,105 people wearing bandanas was declared and subsequently officially confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The bandanas sold at a price of €2 each with all profit made from the sales going to the Irish Cancer Society. The record attempt took place at half time in the TG4 Ladies Senior All Ireland Final between Cork and Monaghan with Daithí Ó Se acting as the MC for the 5 minute attempt that was also broadcast live on TG4.

Speaking at the announcement Marie Hickey, Uachtarán-Tofa of the LGFA, said ‘Our partnership with the Irish Cancer Society was a great success and certainly added colour and excitement to an already great day at the TG4 All Ireland Finals. I would like to thank everyone who took part in the World Record attempt including all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this all possible. I would also like to pay tribute to the Irish Cancer Society who are doing such great work to combat this disease that affects so many people, I am sure that they will put this money to great use.’

“We are delighted to be the chosen charity for the Ladies Gaelic Football Association last year and to have been part of such an imaginative and creative fundraiser at the TG4 All Ireland Finals. To see so many Ladies Gaelic Football Association supporters wearing a pink bandana to support breast cancer was truly heartening. This money will go to supporting those affected by breast cancer funding research and care, information, and support services.  Thanks to the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, TG4 and all the supporters that made us world record breakers!” John McCormack, Chief Executive Officer, Irish Cancer Society
